I miss my dogs more than I miss my parents when I’m at college

I know I’m not the only one

Everyone misses a certain something while they are away at college. Usually it’s friends, parents, siblings, their favorite food place – and their pets.

For anyone that knows me, my dogs are a huge part of my life. It has been a super hard adjustment being away from those happy and loving faces.

Every time I see a dog walking I can’t help myself but ask the owner if I can pet them. Everyone needs some dog love and I know I feel like I’m missing something key in my life while I’m away at college.

Facetiming is crucial

Thank you Apple for creating the most amazing thing, Facetime. As much as I want to talk to my mom, I usually call just to have her show me my dog so I can talk in my baby voice and see her tail wag – even though she has absolutely no idea where my voice is coming from and why I’m not there.

These are moments when I wish my dog could talk, lemme tell ya.

Petland is the closest thing to torture

Every dog person that attends the University of Iowa knows what Petland is.

The usual pattern is that you play with the puppies, realize you miss your own dog, then subsequently ask the workers how much it would cost to buy all the puppies in the place.

They then proceed to go over their rules of how much responsibility it is to have a dog and then you start to rethink your decision of having a quick moment of “OMG! Dude, let’s get a puppy!”

As grand as that idea sounds in the moment, it’s probably not feasible to be a student and a dog owner.

They’re the best thing to come home to

As great as it is to have a roommate, they don’t come crawling and wait at the door for you to get back from the gym or class… thank goodness to be honest, that would be weird.

I miss the constant greetings and feeling like a celebrity when I walk into the door.

I know that I’ll always need to have a dog in my life after missing them so much.

You are their whole life

I just recently had to say goodbye to my oldest dog via Facetime because I was away at school.

Not one part of that situation was easy but you realize how much they mean to you and the impact they have had on your life.

Dogs don’t live long enough, but you are their whole life. So keep that in mind the next time you have to say goodbye to your dog as you leave to go back to school! Time is precious and so is the love that they give you.

So cherish your pup because they love you with everything they have in them and – that is something you can’t find anywhere else!
