We asked drunk people what they were hungry for

The best place for drunk food in Iowa City

Iowa City is known, among other reputations, for two very collegiate activities: getting drunk and eating.

For the more adventurous spirits there’s Mamis Authentic, the Pita Pit, or Pepperjacks. Around 10 O’clock Pancheros is flooded with girls waiting for Kevcab or a sober driver to come pick them up. I once helped a girl who was vomiting in to the trash at Mesa.

Jimmy Johns, in a biblical manner, offers bread to those who need it most. When the drunk need fuel, Iowa city provides.

But which spot takes the crown as the best  drunk food in Iowa City? That’s the question that I set out to ask on a Thursday night downtown.

Ian Johnson

“My first semester I think I went to Mesa every Thursday Friday and Saturday. Right now I really want a taco.”

(He didn’t specify where he would find the taco)

Meredith Hermling (left)

“Jimmy John’s!”

Matt (left) and Josh (right)

Matt: “McDonald’s if I can get it.”

Josh: “Pancheros? I don’t know. I just got kicked out of Union.”

Sammy Reda, Cydney Ardis, Suzi Switzer, Natalie Kelley

Sammy: “Mesa!”

Natalie: “I only eat Pancheros drunk”

Sam Richard and Paige Ruthart

“MESAAAA!”

Alex DeMarco and Lauren ft. Queso

“Pancheros”

Julia Severs, Molly Brennan, Colleen McGough, and Andrea Palazzo

“We like Chipotle.”

(But don’t be deceived – those plates are empty of delicious Mesa pizza. Not Chipotle.)

I’ll be honest, if the answer to this question were up to me the answer would be simple: Mesa. You can’t beat mac and cheese pizza.

OH WAIT, yes you you can. With buffalo chicken pizza. Or guacamole pizza. Pizza with pasta on it. Pizza with a cheeseburger on it. So yes, I’m a bit biased. And yes, I did grab a slice after taking these pictures.

But, with my journalistic integrity held close to my heart, I let the students of this great university tell them yourselves.

And while the answers wavered slightly, let’s just make it final here and now: Mesa wins.
