IU is among the most sleep-deprived universities in the US

No wonder finding a couch in the IMU is damn near impossible

Have you spent numerous nights this semester sacrificing sleep to get a paper done, study for an exam, or hang out with your friends? A recent sleep study by a fitness tracking company called Jawbone suggests you probably have. Indiana University was ranked as the 47th most sleep-deprived university in the United States. With about 1800 universities in the US, that puts us in the top 2.6%. Tired yet?

The average amount of sleep an IU student receives in a night is 6.92 hours with an average bedtime of 12:58 AM and wake-time of 8:35 AM during the week. No wonder the line at the IMU Starbucks is a mile long in between classes everyday and finding a couch in the south lounge is damn near impossible.

We do try to make up for it on the weekend by averaging about 7.38 hours a night. On average during this time, we typically go to bed at 1:44 AM and get up at 9:48 AM in order to make it to brunch at the Village Deli with friends before the morning rush sets in.

Luckily for us, we get significantly more beauty sleep than Purdue who comes in at 8th on the list with an average weekday night’s sleep of 6.72 hours. If you were wondering who gets the least amount of sleep, it’s Columbia — they get 6.68 hours of sleep during the week.

So, good luck with Dead Week and finals, Hoosiers. Hopefully, you find some time for a nap. Chances are, you’ve earned it.
