How much does it really cost to miss class for an out-of-state student?

You’ll thank us later

We’ve all missed class and nobody’s here to judge you for it. But, it’s still important to put things into perspective. IU is not a cheap school to go to, especially for out-of-state students.

Whether you partied too hard the previous night, didn’t manage to wake up in time even after the 50 alarms you set or you just simply couldn’t stand an 8 AM Intro to Macro lecture, it’s totally normal to not make it to a few classes in a semester.

That being said, it’s an expensive choice to make.

Let’s break it down and crunch some numbers provided by IU’s student fees listing.

For out-of-state and international students, the annual fees (9 months) is $48,585 which includes $9,874 for living expenses and $3,960 for miscellaneous expenses.

This leaves $34,751 for tuition and fees. To be enrolled full time, one needs at least 12 credit hours per semester. each class is generally 3 credits. After all the complicated formulas and research, we find that cost of one 3-credit class is $3,441.91! (for Spring 2016)

One semester has 16 weeks and 79 days of class. Classes tend to meet either two or three times a week. All of this adds up to $105.43 per class for out-state students.

We pay over $100 per missed session, remember that when you decided to nap through class.

So let’s put that into IU terms

That’s also 21 times the fee for your first spare room key at Wright

You would be depriving yourself of 18 burritos from Chipotle. Which is a shame, seeing as their recent nationwide training day means their food is safer than ever to consume in mass quantities.

You can say goodbye to the 13 Baked! Munchie specials that got away.

Speaking of getting away, 20 cab rides from the College Mall back to campus is your equivalent.

$105 is 53 pints of beer at Kilroy’s on a Friday. I would advise against drinking that amount over the same amount of time as the class you skipped.

You could go to Mother bears 8 times for the Munchie Madness and stuff your face.

Also if you’re a chemistry student, you can buy 0.8 of a book for CHEM-C 102

So next time you wake up at 7:30 and it’s pitch dark and you can’t help but ask yourself, “is it really worth it?” just suck it up and go to class. Now you know the price.
