WGTB is a new way to experience Georgetown Basketball

‘I see us branching out and growing to include people without radio shows’

As Georgetown Basketball picks up, students can start to experience basketball season in a whole new way through WGTB’s Sports Department, which broadcasts basketball games and adds student commentaries.

WGTB is known for its eclectic group of students who broadcast various shows online. Georgetown Radio’s long history with the university stems back to 1946 and the student-run organization has since grown to include more than simply music, like the new sports coverage.

Georgetown Radio’s Sports Department are fans of all things Georgetown and athletic – and students, just like us. From college brackets to professional sports, commentary from Georgetown students on the radio adds a new flair to the traditional coverage of Hoya athletics.

WGTB Sports Department director Stephen Yeager, a sophomore in the SFS, believes in the natural excitement of competition. In reflection of his time as commenter, he said: “Well, I’ve been a sports fan all my life, but it’s especially cool being a basketball fan here since we have such a historic program that is pretty good almost every year.”

On the topic of other teams at Georgetown, Stephen aded: “I never really got into soccer much before coming here, but I’ve found myself following our soccer team since they’ve been so good recently and the games are so fun to go to.”

Georgetown Radio is quickly becoming the best new way to get the latest sports updates for students by students.

The live student commentary is an entirely different medium than previous sports coverage. Instead of reading about the score of the game, WGTB broadcasts give live updates and up-to-the-second responses about sporting news.

WGTB gives students, as well as student athletes, a place to give their insights on what’s happening in student athletics and professional sports, while still providing a fun radio show to listen to while doing homework or simply chilling.

On the future of WGTB, Stephen said: “I see us branching out and growing to include people without radio shows.

“There’s no reason you need to have a show to broadcast games, so I want to advertise the department to everyone on campus.”
