Why is FSU so easily offended?

Just because we have ‘safe spaces’ doesn’t mean you should feel entitled

Amid a rise of “safe spaces” and rampant entitlement on college campuses around the world, why have we become so offended by literally everything?

We live in the 21st Century, but we are the weakest generation. Why? We are offended by just about anything and everything you can think of.

Now, I don’t mean to “offend you,” but in all honesty I don’t really care if I do. It’s time to cut the crap and be real here.

You don’t need a free speech zone to speak your mind.

You don’t need special committees, various clubs, and a slew of laws to prohibit people from offending you. It’s very easy to not get your feelings hurt.

“How is that?” you might ask. Get over it, that’s how. I hate to be so harsh, but that’s how this problem started. Our parents went too easy on us, they never punished us, they never told us “no,” they bought us everything, they fought our battles for us, they did our dirty work.

That is why we are entitled, and that’s why we feel so attacked when someone else says something we don’t agree with.

I wanted to just share with you some examples I’ve seen on FSU campus during the semester and a half that I have been here. Many of you may be following various presidential candidates like Trump, Bernie, Hillary, Cruz, and others.

The most recent, and probably the most pathetic example is that of a Donald Trump piñata, which will be hung in the Student Union at some point in the near future (it may have already happened, I don’t really care) for people to hit with sticks, because they don’t agree with what he’s saying.

You’re in college, get over it. Is that really how you deal with your problems?

There are clubs on campus that promote uses of various, “politically correct,” terms. You know what I’m talking about. I can’t even begin to name all of the terms there are now. Instead of African-American, we now have, ‘People of Color.’ Instead of poor, we have ‘Economically Disadvantaged,’ and the list goes on.

We live in the United States of America, and we have a constitution that protects our right to free speech, we don’t need special zones in order to speak our minds. We don’t need special support groups; we don’t need any of that. All you need is your system of beliefs and your voice. However, with freedom of speech, you need to remember that it is a two-way street.

Someone’s beliefs and morals may come into conflict with yours, and you need to be able to respect that, whether you like it or not. This generation was not taught to respect the undeniable fact that not every single person they will meet on this planet is going to agree with them. Instead of simply saying, “I respect your beliefs, now please respect mine,” we have been reduced to hitting piñatas, forming committees, and signing meaningless online petitions to ban certain words from being used.

I don’t want to live in a world ruled by cowardice and the inability to perceive reality for what it is. I want to live in a world where all of us get along because we share a mutual respect, a strong level of maturity, and a high amount of integrity and character. After all, that is why we all came to this school, because we all value those qualities. It’s just about time we act like it, instead of being hypocrites.

If all of us drop the crybaby attitudes, the entitled mentality, and the blinders we have over our eyes, this campus and quite frankly this country would be better places. We are a melting pot of cultures and beliefs, and that’s what makes this nation so great. There are people of different backgrounds, cultures, and countries at this school. Be united in your diversity, instead of using it to build walls (yes, like the wall Trump wants to build), because all that does is prevent communication and positivity.

This world needs more love and less negativity.

Stop getting offended so easily.

Build a bridge and get over it.

Apologize.

Stop fighting.

Acknowledge and respect other people’s views.

Demand that they respect your own.
