Meet AKA’s new additions

They added 33 new members to its organization on Sunday

While walking around the campus of the University of Florida, Greek letters can be found everywhere. We have one of the largest Greek populations in the country; thousands of students on our campus involved in Panhellenic sororities, IFC fraternities, Multicultural Greek Council Sororities and Fraternities, Professional Greek Organizations, and National Panhellenic Council Sororities and Fraternities.

The initiation process for MGC and NPHC Greek organizations is much different than for Panhellenic and IFC Organizations. As an outsider, I can’t speak much on the process because, quite frankly, I don’t know it. What I do know, however, is that it’s selective and requires determination, tenacity and drive — qualities that are important to any organization.

A new membership presentation, more colloquially known as a probate, is when the new members of the organization get to show themselves to the campus for the first time as members. While showing interest in their particular organization, it’s imperative to uphold the utmost discretion because no one is supposed to know which organization you want to be a part of until you are revealed.

After the new member presentation, I got a few words from some of the newest Alpha women:

“To me, finally becoming a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha means that I am now part of an organization that runs deep within my family. It will also allow me to continue to support and uplift the community in ways that are important to me. The sisterhood is fresh. While we are still getting to know each other and forging our relationships, we all share a strong desire to do good in our community. I look forward to continuing and serving the purpose of this sisterhood for the rest of my life.” – Kelsey Young

“I’m elated to be a part of this illustrious sisterhood. Seeking Alpha Kappa Alpha taught me confidence, selflessness, and persistence which are all skills essential to being a successful woman in this world. Now that I am officially an Alpha Woman, I am excited to use my talents, along with those of my sisters to make a difference in the world than is bigger than anything that I could ever accomplish alone.” – Faith Morgan

Congratulations to these new sisters. May the legacy of sisterhood, service and scholarship continue throughout the University of Florida campus.
