Kiran Sonty gives back to the Emory community by helping students to be stronger players in the work force

In an attempt to make Emory students (even) more successful in the professional realm, Kiran Sonty is taking his passion for management and resume-building to another level and is working one-on-one with students to help them find jobs, and thus better market themselves to potential employers.

His start-up, Sonty Success Recruiting, aims to provide clients with strong and promising connections and better professional skills – from resume and cover-letter building, to networking skills – in order for them to be able to enter the work force being better equipped to give back to underdeveloped communities and to start non-profit organizations.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a Senior at Emory studying Biology and Film Studies. My biggest interest is learning for learning’s sake.

Some say I procrastinate, but I think I use my time browsing Wikipedia effectively. In my spare time I like playing tennis, watching movies, and “porch chilling” at Kappa Sigma.

How can your start-up provoke a change on campus and how can it directly aid students?

My startup allows students at Emory to really showcase why we are a first-class institution. I want every student to make the most of their education and experiences and translate them into an amazing career.

I have specific experiences in Education Management and Charter Schools and know that there are a bunch of managers in these fields that want to meet our students who are invested in improving the communities around them.

How does Sonty Success Recruiting actually work?

I don’t have a specific plan but in my own career path through college I realized that I ended up doing the research on almost every type of career to try and find myself.

I started college and went through most of it intent on being pre-med but I found myself trying everything from business operations, to education, to biological research. A couple of good practices like keeping a professional resume, networking through your friends and family, and keeping a good LinkedIn are really important in whatever you do, and it helped me get my own dream job.

I can help a student leverage their own network and present the best version of himself / herself to get noticed.

Who inspired you to set up your start-up?

I was motivated to start my startup by the inspirational efforts of many charter school recruiters and education management professionals who encouraged me to be a strong advocate for education and recruiting talented students.

I was also inspired by teaching professionals that I met interning in various departments of Teach For America, a national corps of teachers.

What are your plans for the future of your start-up?

My startup will definitely exist for as long as I am an undergraduate. I would like to find a mentee to pass along my wealth of information and professional contacts to continue Operations.

What are your plans after graduation?

I recently accepted a full-time job offer as an Operations Analyst in Kansas City with the Insurance Company, AIG. I am excited to apply the critical thinking I learned throughout my education in a new environment.
