Machete man fatally shot, classes resume “as normal”

The full story of everything that went down at Boulder

The CU Boulder campus is officially clear of threats and students are able to return to classes as usual…but why the hell would we want to?

It’s been a bit of a crazy day in Boulder. As most of us know, there was a man in the Champion Center on Stadium Drive armed with a machete this morning around 9am. The police responded promptly and shot the suspect who was confirmed dead two hours after the initial alerts. The entire center was on lockdown following this morning’s events, but it didn’t stop there.

Later, at around 1pm, CU alerts and the official CU Twitter page informed students that there were reports of an active shooter on campus at the UMC. This was later deemed an uncomfirmed hoax, but only after a premature all clear update followed by another warning.

In the next update active shooter was changed to active “harmer” on campus, around the same area.

The following update stated that the 911 calls were “believed to be a hoax,” and ultimately after hours of speculation we got the final message that there were no threats to campus.

This has been an extremely unnerving situation and it is definitely better to be safe than sorry, but the constant updates from police with words like unconfirmed and all clear followed basically by a jk-go-back-inside were definitely scary. There has been some speculation that the alerts system was hacked, however when reached for comment, Boulder PD confirmed that this is not the case and all information is accurate and as up to date as possible. They did however admit that some information was given prematurely.

Here’s hoping this “all clear” is to stay.
