BREAKING: Hunter R. Rawlings III appointed as interim president of Cornell

He will take over from acting president Michael Kotlikoff

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Robert Harrison ‘76 announced today in an email to the Cornell Community that President Emeritus Hunter R. Rawlings III has been appointed as the university’s Interim President.

He will take over the duties of president from Acting President Michael Kotlikoff on April 25, at which time Kotlikoff will resume his normal duties as Provost.

This is not Rawlings’ first time as Cornell president, or even as interim president. He served as Cornell’s 10th president from 1998 to 2003, and later returned as interim president from 2005-2006 following the resignation of President Jeffrey Lehman. Prior to these appointments, Rawlings was a professor in the departments of Classics and History.

More recently, he served as the President of the American Association of Universities (which garnered national attention for its study of sexual assault on college campuses) from 2011 to 2015.

“His inspired leadership and experience make him the perfect choice,” Kotlikoff said of Rawlings.

Cornell sources have confirmed the international search for Elizabeth Garrett’s permanent successor will begin in the coming months.
