Someone made a Facebook group called ‘Union of White Cornell Students’

Are they serious?

Yesterday, a Facebook page popped up called Union of White Cornell Students.

My initial reaction was simply, is this a joke? Is there really a necessity for the racial group that makes up the overwhelming majority of Cornell’s student body to unionize?

Their first and only written post speaks for itself, but in case you don’t have the patience to read it all, I’ll extract a few especially egregious phrases:

“To date, we are a group of over 100 people that meet in secrecy to avoid potential character assassinations of the press and the Black Lives Matter extremist groups.”

A bit later, it reads:

“We are a community that attempts to recognize the many accomplishments of the white race and preserve our heritage. All attempts in recent history to protest for perceived structural inequalities and grievances against white people to gain social footing has resulted in outright trivial demands and hostilities against us. We have observed this here at Cornell and are ashamed at the response of the university to placate these delusional minority groups on-campus honoring their demands.”

Just when you thought it couldn’t get more ludicrous, in response to the list of demands black students recently delivered to President Garrett, which included incorporating coursework into the curriculum pertaining to racial, religious and gender topics, hiring more black faculty, and so forth, the group wrote:

“I think we all know that institutional racism doesn’t exist given Cornell is a very liberal school, and the very notion of hiring black professors and administrators to solve a non-existent issue is just ridiculous. Nor will there be an established “safe space” to shelter people who cannot function appropriately in an academic environment.

“Going forward. We will seek to strengthen our university with fellow white students and reverse the nonsensical demands of extremist organizations on our campus.”

The goal of their message seems to be to “protect” themselves from black and other minority groups who wish to have their voices heard in the Cornell community by dismissing them altogether, and calling them ridiculous extremists.

While the contents of the post are almost too baseless and inane to merit a response, I will say one thing.

The Union of White Cornell Students has referred to race as “a non-existent issue.” Their Facebook page is a physical manifestation of the issue.

And one thing is for sure: if more people catch wind of The Union of White Cornell Student’s Facebook page, this group is about to cause a very existent issue for Cornell’s national and international image.

Tread softly. You’re embarrassing your university.
