Going ‘Into The Streets’ and getting out of the Cornell bubble

Whether you are here for another year or four, Ithaca is our community, not just where our school happens to be located

Into the Streets, a yearly volunteer event that aims at mobilizing Cornell students to get involved in the Ithaca community, happened once again on Saturday.

Last year had a record number of volunteers with over 1,000 students participating.

That number was capped at just 550 this year to enhance the volunteer experience.

I volunteered at Groton Head Start, raking leaves and pulling weeds in the playground area of the children’s center.

While the weather wasn’t ideal, I really enjoyed being able to get off campus and spend some time focused on something other than my upcoming exams.

It felt great to give back to Ithaca and learn more about some of the community organizations and their needs, as it can often be difficult to get outside of our Cornell bubble.

During our four years at the ‘nell, our days are filled with classes, research, clubs and other time-consuming activities that often anchor us to a few select buildings on campus.

But whether you are here for another year or four, Ithaca is our community, not just where our school happens to be located.

It is important for us all to recognize Ithaca as our community and our ability to serve by getting out into the streets.
