The 90-year-old who got his Sociology PhD from Cornell is the hero we need

There’s no age limit to accomplishing your dreams

Throughout the various internships I’ve been fortunate enough to complete throughout my Cornell undergraduate, I have encountered a couple veterinarians who actually finished obtaining their DVM at the age of 78 or older.

The news of Benjamin Franco Suarez immediately reminded me of those individuals and what an inspiration they are to our community.

As we all know, Cornell is an Ivy league that challenges more than you ever could have imagined. Although there may be bumps in the road, it’s people like Franco Suarez who prove that you don’t have to be a certain age to accomplish your dream.

After completing his doctorate in sociology at Cornell back in 1972, Suarez decided that earning money and finding a job would be the best thing for him to do before heading back to school.

Little did he realize that this temporary leave from Cornell would last 43 years.

Throughout his life, he collected information pertaining to fertility behavior of women, specifically from Bolivia, further focusing on economic development in developing countries and Latin American studies.

Obtaining a Ph.D. at such an age demonstrates dedication and determination.  It’s individuals like Franco Suarez that should remind us to continue pursuing our dreams.

Don’t let the ‘nell bring you down … even if the road is a bit different than you had expected.
