Bid day was a sorority’s biggest day of the year

There were a lot of excited girls

Last week was the day all sororities at Clemson University had been waiting for: Bid Day. The last two weekends had been spent in rounds of recruitment, each of the 12 sororities having hundreds of conversations with over 1,000 potential new members, trying to find the perfect fit for their new pledge classes.

The PNMs had also been looking forward to this day since they registered for formal recruitment, since today was the day they’d find their home for not just the remainder of their time at college, but for the rest of their lives.

At about 6:00PM, the girls were led inside Tillman Hall, where they were given an envelope containing the name of the final sorority that had chosen to extend a bid to them.

If they chose to accept it, they waited for their cue to run down Bowman field to their new, anxiously waiting sisters, who welcomed them with open arms.

From there, it became a celebration. Every sorority had selected a theme for this year’s bid day, ranging from the jungle, to Fuller House, to the Olympics, and to even “Share a Coke”.

Cameras flashed, music blasted, and the PNMs went from potential new members to actual new members as they were introduced around to as many of their new sisters as possible, celebrating the fact that they had made it through the longest two weeks of their college life to a worthwhile ending.

Bid Day 2016 had a sweet twist this year when two ClemsonLIFE students had chosen to accept bids from Sigma Kappa and Kappa Alpha Theta. ClemsonLIFE is a program through Clemson University for college-aged students with intellectual disabilities to be able to further their education and independence.

A sorority’s ability to further integrate ClemsonLIFE into their community follows Sigma Kappa’s decision last semester to initiate a ClemsonLIFE student, which was a first for Clemson’s Panhellenic community and opened the door to forever bridge ClemsonLIFE and Greek Life.

Congratulations and welcome to all the girls.
