What you should actually do on family weekend at Bucknell

There’s more than to do than just super

It’s that time of year again: the time when the homesickness kicks in just enough that you get excited to bring your parents back on campus, and if you’re lucky enough, they’ll bring your dog.

Yet, this beautiful college we call home is placed, ever-so conveniently, in the middle of cornfields, so finding activities to keep your family occupied can be stressful. They may say they love it, but trust me, you and the fam don’t need a 16th tour of campus.

Instead, here’s how to rock family weekend:

Attend the Christy’s A Capella concert

Bucknell’s A Capella groups are one of the greatest things about campus, and Christy’s is their best, blow-out concert of the year. From Two Past Midnight to Beyond Unison, your family will feel like they’re straight out of Pitch Perfect. Even if you don’t love a cappella, an event like this will surely make your mom swoon.

Laugh your face off at the We Brake Family Weekend shows

Bucknell is a hotbed for comedy, and We Brake For Nobody never fails to supply a hearty laugh. Their quick-witted style of Improv comedy will have you doubled-over, and if you have younger siblings coming, this event will keep them occupied.

Take your parents to a super

While partying with your parents doesn’t immediately sound like a great idea, taking them to a super will be a blast. Gather up a couple of friends and their parents and hit St. Catherine street as a squad. Your and your friends’ parents can all reminisce about their college party days, while the rest of you dance like crazy to “Closer” by the Chainsmokers.

Eat wings at Bull Run

If you’re parents are necessarily the party-type, take them out for a lunch at Bull Run. Grab an order of Bull Dip and wings and use the time to fill them in on how great classes are going.

Grab dinner at Rusty Rail

Although it’s about 15 minutes off campus, Rusty Rail Brewing Company is the premiere dinner spot for Family Weekend. The game tables upstairs will keep you occupied while you wait for a table, and Dad will love the local brewery-feel. Not to mention their loaded nachos are to die for.

Rent a canoe

Through Bucknell’s Outdoor Education & Leadership program, students can rent canoes, paddles, life jackets, etc. at extremely low rates. If you want a great way to get off campus, but still have fun, rent a canoe and paddle around on the Susquehanna.

Nothing says “family bonding” like being stuck in a boat together.

Hike at Dale’s Ridge

Along the same lines of renting a canoe, but significantly less wet, take your family for a hike at Dale’s Ridge. The trail is a short drive from campus and provides excellent views of the beautiful Pennsylvanian farmlands which surround Bucknell.

Attend the Bucknell – VMI football game

Bucknell pride runs deep amongst students and their parents. What better way to show off your family’s love for the bison than going to a football game?

See a movie at the Campus theater

This weekend, the theater is playing Meryl Streep’s new film, Florence Foster Jenkins. If your family isn’t the football type, no other movie-type quite says “quiet family night in” like a Meryl Streep film.

While you desperately clean your room in anticipation of your family’s arrival, no need to worry about how you’ll entertain them. Because, from football games, to supers, to canoe trips, there’s always something fun to do in Lewisburg.
