Mumps outbreak on BU’s campus

Three unlucky terriers have been diagnosed

On Wednesday morning, Boston University reported the diagnoses of three undergraduates with mumps after several other Boston area campuses reported the virus.

The first case was reported prior to spring break, while the other two were reported during the break. Only one of the three terriers lives on campus. All three students have been advised to seclude themselves during the five day infectious period, and after that they will be safe to attend classes.

According to a report from BU Today, 13 cases of mumps have been confirmed at Harvard University, two have been confirmed at the University of Massachusetts Boston, and one has been confirmed at Tufts.

To prevent the spread of mumps be sure to wash your hands and to avoid sharing items such as beverages, food, eating utensils, etc.

Symptoms of mumps are fever, headache, and the swelling of salivary glands. If you have any of these symptoms call Student Health Services at 617-353-3575 for a test.
