Alcohol violations have gone up to 1,004 cases in 2014

Up from 701 in 2013

Boston University released its annual Security and Fire Safety report, which found shocking results.

In past years, crime rates at BU steadily increased, but in 2014, there was a jump in these numbers for almost every type of crime.

Alcohol violations alone have perhaps the biggest leap, going from 2013’s 701 violations to 2014’s 1,004. This is up 43 percent, and they are expecting it to be even larger this year.

Dean of Students Ken Elmore said the drastic climb in these numbers is due to an increase in education across the university.

Not only are RAs reporting crimes, but so are many students and bystanders. Alcohol is consistently BU’s greatest crime, so the emphasis on this education is on alcohol-related offenses.

Although there are a few more sex-related crimes reported in 2014 than in previous years, there are many that still go unreported.

The numbers for aggravated assaults and robberies remained the same from 2013 to 2014, and there has been a steady decline in the number of burglaries on campus.
