We tried Thanksgiving dinner at BU

The green beans were slightly charred, well seasoned and had just the right amount of crunch

Eating in the dining hall is tough. Nothing seems to taste like home, especially with the holidays just around the corner.

BU Dining created a Thanksgiving-themed dinner to make campus feel a little more like home for the holidays.

Here’s a taste (get it?) of what it was all about.

First Course: Gluten-free fun

I tried the gluten-free station’s mashed potatoes, gravy, kale and cranberry sauce.

The potatoes were a little more chunky than I would have liked and I quickly realized that I am not a fan of cranberry sauce.

The kale had a strange texture and reminded me of something that should be used as a garnish.

Second course: More potatoes please

Because I don’t eat turkey, I got in line at another station to sample the mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce.

I was greeted with a concerned look when I said I’d pass on the turkey.

The stuffing seemed to be a lump of cornbread, but hey, I’m not complaining.

The mashed potatoes were creamier but the cranberry sauce was even more sour.  The kale on this plate was better seasoned and tasted much better than the gluten free station’s kale.

Third course: Quino-what?

I sampled the cranberry quinoa pilaf and unfortunately, this was the worst thing I ate.

The sweetness of the cranberries sharply countered the strong taste of the chives.

I was in a food coma after this

Fourth course: Gotta love the greens

The green beans were AMAZING. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy with such a mundane vegetable, especially in the dining hall.

They were slightly charred, well seasoned and had just the right amount of crunch.

My roommate tried the Brussel sprouts and butternut squash.

“It was good. Tasted like home cooking”, she said.

Dessert: Terrific trio

Although I was mid food coma after three plates of essentially just carbs, I had to try the dessert.

I managed to eat a bite of pumpkin pie, nibbled at a cookie and ate most of the chocolate espresso cheesecake bar.

It’s not home cooking but I can’t complain.

Thank you for all that you do BU Dining!
