More people need to appreciate EmWool, the best freshman dorm

You can only go up from here

When I received my room assignment back in August, I was pretty disappointed. I was looking forward to the prospect of living in Andrews or Keeney, and hadn’t even heard of Woolley.

Now, after experiencing the EmWool life for over a semester, I know it’s the best freshman dorm on campus, and this is why.

Semi-private bathrooms

The college equivalent of luxury, semi-private bathrooms are a huge perk. The shower is usually free, there are no long and cold walks to the bathroom at night,  and you can leisurely ‘drop the kids off at the pool’ without hearing the grunts and sighs in a stall next door.

Priceless

Proximity to Thayer Street

A few feet away from Thayer, EmWool dwellers can enjoy everything Brunonia’s main street has to offer. From CVS to Urban Outfitters and Antonio’s pizza, most of the interesting places on Thayer are a few minutes away. Not to mention we get the beautiful, soothing sounds of garbage trucks backing up at 6am.

Scenic views

Being right off of Thayer offers great street-side views.

All the garbage bins to the left are nice too

The V-Dub

The Ratty’s younger sibling lies on the ground floor of Em-Wool. Serving better food than the Ratty despite the lack of options, the Dub is the perfect place to regroup after a morning of class before hopping up the stairs to your room. It’s ideal for those winter  breakfasts and dinners when you just don’t want to go outside. And although it’s closed on the weekends, it’s ok with us because nothing beats an Andrews burrito.

The gym

Let’s be honest, it’s a pretty shitty gym. But it’s got all you need for a great cardio session, and has enough equipment for a decent workout when the path to the Nelson is snowed over.

There are washing machines on every floor

It’s underrated. No need to walk down 4 floors to get to the laundry room, only to find out that the washers are full and you have to go back upstairs again. We just walk down the hall.

That “rustic charm”

I had to duct-tape my chair.

It needs renovating

All in all, Woolley is the dorm everyone loves to hate. It doesn’t have the glamour of Andrews or the lounges of Keeney, but it’s home. Plus, chances are we’ll get an upgrade next year.

I wouldn’t want it any other way.
