I danced in the thunderstorm at Brown the other night

I didn’t care that it was cold or that I’d ruin my hair

It was 3am and I was just about to go to bed when I heard the thunder. I threw on boots and a jacket before rushing out the door, much to the bewilderment of my roommate and her boyfriend who called after me. I didn’t care that it was cold or that I’d ruin my hair. I wanted to dance in the storm.

Lightening at 4am. Wow.

Most people try to avoid the storm but I say dance in it, quite literally. Our emotions are in sync with the nature around us and if its thundering outside, I say let your emotions thunder too. Go outside without pulling a hoodie over your head. Let yourself get soaking wet. It’s fun. It’s thrilling, the feeling of the water pulling you down and pouring over your face like a waterfall. We’re all so worried about our hair, our clothes and our cosmetics that sometimes we forget to live and take advantage of the music of the thunder, the beauty of the flashing lightening, the lush dollops of water trickling over our skin and the rush of wind that moves between your bare legs.

Next time there’s a thunderstorm, don’t hide in your room and drown out the noise. Instead, listen to it, feel the adrenaline and the sounds course through you. Even if it’s just raining, go outside and unzip your jacket and look up and feel it because there’s nothing more peaceful and grounding than embracing the elements. It’s worth the wet clothes. You can change once you go back inside – but you can’t replicate that feeling of freedom and oneness.
