Beyond the fad of DMs and stalking the Snapchat best friends list, the phenomenon of Netflix and Chill has proven to be a trustworthy way to get in some quality movie-watching, or maybe a little something more.
It’s all up to interpretation.
To figure out what students at Brown do when they Netflix and Chill, The Tab went around campus asking:

What is your ideal Netflix and Chill movie?
How long into Netflix and Chill do you actually plan on watching the movie?
The responses varied. Some were surprising, others left us confused. But no more beating around the bush. Here they are:

What does Netflix and Chill mean to you?
Well from what I have seen and heard on social media, there is some sort of sexual implication involved, but it doesn’t need to be that way. Obviously, it is up to the interpretation of others.
What is your ideal Netflix and Chill movie?
Maybe something nice like a good romantic comedy.
How long into Netflix and Chill do you actually plan on watching the movie?
It depends on how long you have known the person for. Definitely not the entire movie. I would say like absolute max is something around a quarter way through the movie, maybe a little more. If it’s someone you have gotten together with for a while, I say that it’s easier to get started from the get-go.

It’s an expression that people use to “spend time” with someone. And “time” meaning for just two people, you know like sexual activity. I mean others just want some good Netflix.
What is your ideal Netflix and Chill movie?
Well I don’t have a Netflix, so I’m a little depleted of resources there. I guess I would want to watch some sort of awards show like the Grammys or something.
How long into Netflix and Chill do you actually plan on watching the movie?
Well I would definitely not wait out the entire Grammys. Maybe like halfway through?

Modern culture now paints Netflix and Chill as a very abstract term for sexual intercourse.
What is your ideal Netflix and Chill movie?
Oh fuck, that’s a good question. It should be romantic. It should also have a good soundtrack because we’re not going to watch it, just listen to it. So I guess Titanic . (He continues on to serenade the authors with a rendition of Celine Dion’s, My Heart Will Go On. Swoon. )
How long into Netflix and Chill do you actually plan on watching the movie?
I would execute my master plan in like 20 minutes of the movie. That’s, like, the first act break in a movie structure, so it’s the first low-point in the movie before the most climactic scene. I mean, if we go beyond that point, you’re going to get sucked into watching the movie.

I guess the common answer is to slyly ask someone to hook up without actually saying it directly. But for me, that would be an issue with the whole no Netflix problem. #TeamPhilo

Definitely a feel-good movie like Almost Famous or something similar.

I’d give it half an hour to 45 minutes.

Wow Netflix, what a great invention. It’s really awesome and it means great company. I use it a lot. And Chill is something that’s really cold, or it’s when you hang out with friends. The problem is when you put those two things together, it means something else. 😉

Right now it’s The Breakfast Club because I haven’t seen it in a while and it’s good.

Never. I am there for the Netflix part of Netflix and Chill.
