Lookin’ sharp, Prof

Professor Barrett Hazeltine.

First of all, if you don’t know who this man is … Do you even go here?

He is Professor Emeritus of Engineering and one of our most beloved faculty members. He actually went to Princeton, but in my interview with him, he said he definitely preferred Brown. During his time at Princeton, where he received a Bachelors and Masters degree in Engineering, he found it to be very elitist and snobby.

“When I was there no one wore jeans to class. I had to wear chinos,” he told me.

At Brown, he feels as though the culture is much more friendly and wonderful.

He said, “People don’t take on airs.”

In the past, he has had people come into his famous ENGN 9: Management of Industrial and Nonprofit Organizations in outfits ranging from sportswear to belly dancing attire. He enjoys having a striking and interesting mixture of people.

When I asked him about his fashion icon, he said he didn’t have one, but mentioned that “you have to move with the times,” referring to a time when everyone wore neckties, which have since become obsolete.

The most important thing for him as a professor is to dress in such a way that shows his students are worth dressing well for.
