Bears vs Zombies 2015 is ON

Prepare for the zombie apocalypse

Bears vs Zombies is a three-day long live-action simulation of a zombie plague taking place across campus right now.

It is essentially an organized, campus-wide game of tag, almost like Sharks and Minos, that started 8pm last night and ends this Saturday at noon.

The game was founded last year by campaign chair Betty Peng. This year, 100 per cent of the money raised through orange bandana sales will go to GlobeMed’s partner organization, U-Tena, located in Nairobi, Kenya.

GlobeMed co-campaign chair Jackie Kim said: “That’s the main mission of our GlobeMed chapter — to raise money for them.

“U-Tena works to educate their local community about sexual and reproductive health as well as financial literacy through song, dance and other performance arts.”

At the beginning of the game, there is one designated “Zombie” and everyone else is a “Bear.” If a Bear is tagged with both hands by the Zombie, then the Bear is transformed into a Zombie.

The goal is for Zombies to take over campus, or for Bears to survive until the end of the game.

Players must be wearing their orange bandanas at all times to show that they are in the game. Zombies wear the bandanas around their heads and Bears wear them on their right bicep.

Jackie added: “It’s a great form of stress relief because it’s fun, but it’s not something you have to devote any extra time to — you can just go about your day as you normally would, and then when you’re outside you’ll occasionally get this adrenaline rush as you either escape the clutches of a Zombie or chase after a Bear.”

Tip for bears: try your best to avoid being tagged by a Zombie. In addition to just running away from them, you can throw sock balls at Zombies, which “stuns” them for five minutes. When Zombies are stunned, they cannot attack Bears.
