Protesters seek recognition for Native Americans at Brown

Happy Fall Weekend (sorry, Indigenous Peoples’ Day)

Protests hosted by the group Native Americans at Brown, NAB, gathered together yesterday on the Main Green.

In light of the recent Brown Daily Herald Article, this demonstration was an important sign of student indignation towards negligence and prejudice at Brown.

Armani Madison, an ex-BDH reporter, said: “This is an issue not of freedom of speech, which some assert, as this is not a viewpoint-based disagreement. This is an issue of accountability, and of the complicity in upholding white supremacy and the marginalization of the ‘other’ individuals on this campus.”

To change the name of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ day would be to turn the holiday into a  celebration of the various indigenous cultures on campus and beyond.

The protests were also supported by the Black Student Union, the Collective of Asian American and Pacific Island students, the Latino/Latina students at Brown, the Undergraduate Council of Students and all of those who have stood against racism on campus.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day and welcome back to class!
