How I avoided the freshman fifteen

After a long night with my friends, nothing sounds better than comfort food to slowly push you into a food coma

The freshman fifteen is as ominous as it is all too common. Adjusting to college is a massive introduction to new lifestyles and new habits. Just make sure those habits are the healthy ones.

Try to not order that large pizza at 2 AM when you get back home after a night out

After a long night with my friends, nothing sounds better than comfort food to slowly push you into a food coma. Of course, we all deserve a treat like this every once in a while, but making this a regular thing is not healthy.

Wear exercise clothes to give you motivation

when I roam campus in yoga pants, a sports bra, and an Adidas top, I may think to myself, “I’m already dressed for the part — maybe I’ll go to the gym, or maybe not”. This technique is not 100% effective because, I mean come on, yoga pants are so comfortable to wear while taking a nap or going to class. I love channeling my inner-Kendall Jenner as inspiration for these outfits. She does everything in them and looks so good at the same time.

Try to use your student meal plan on healthy options

At the University of Arizona I could fall to the trap of constantly eating Chick Fil-A, Burger King, and Panda Express. Instead I lean toward sandwiches, salads, wraps, stir fry, and smoothies. I start off most days with Einstein Bros bagels and a strawberry banana low-fat smoothie. Although eating healthy in college is difficult, it can be done.

Make time for the gym

A great motivation for going to the gym is scheduling ahead of time. I try to set an alarm to remind me that I have decided to go to the gym. Setting time aside for the gym is an extra push to go. I only manage two or three workouts a week with my college schedule. But hey, at least I’m getting to the gym or the yoga mat on my dorm floor.

Switch up your current exercise routine so you don’t get bored

Since leaving my high school sports team, I have tried to switch up my routines. From running, to swimming, to cardio and lifting, this keeps me busy and not bored of constantly repeating the same movements. Try new workouts or activities like a boxing class at the campus rec center or go on a hike with friends. A good trick is to work out with a friend. One, you can’t bail on the gym. Two, you have someone to work out with.

Personal motivation is key

Surprisingly, since going to college, I have wanted to get in better shape overall. Being surrounded by gorgeous people all the time and living in a year-round pool party season has only increased my motivation. Your goal should be to be healthy, get in good physical shape, and work your inner Beyoncé. Confidence goes a long way.
