Thoughts on my first and last UofA basketball game
I finally understand the hype about the red balloons
My senior year is coming to an end and many people were appalled by the fact that I’ve never attended an Arizona basketball game before. I’m a huge sports fan and have been to almost every sporting event there is, except for basketball — until now. Here is how my experience was with the game.
The line
This is the only sporting event I’ve been to where people arrive 4-6 hours before the game starts. It’s a serious thing, people are handing out snacks and beverages. People sit and do their homework — also, great way to pass time. Everyone is dressed to the nines with Arizona attire. That’s when you know it’s going to be a party!
Oh, and here’s a pro tip: Don’t bring large purses or bags, they are not allowed in (which I was unaware of). However, if you are asked to get rid of the bag, not to worry — the library has lockers for them.
Before-game-time hype
Finding a seat in ZonaZoo is the key to having a great game experience. My roommate has been to multiple games leading us to the best seats right behind the band. Events before the game consist of grabbing game day food: vegetarian hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, etc. The basketball stadium is known to have the best food out of all of the sporting events at the University, so get in line for some yummies.
The chants
Every sport has their own chants, which I’ve learned over the years from going to games. But I was so taken back from all the unique and fun chants that basketball comes with. At the start of every game, everybody turns their backs as the opposing team is being announced and shouts, “Sucks” after their name. During the game as well, fans distract opposing team by commentating their actions: “bounce bounce, pass, bounce.” It’s pretty amusing.
Wilbur
Our amazing mascot never looses his school spirit. He is always keeping the crowd loud and excited as he runs up and down the aisles, high-fiving people. Basketball is way more involved than I had ever imagined.
The distracting balloons in the second half
I’ve always heard people talking about these balloons and now I finally understand the hype. At the end of the second half, students are handed millions and millions of skinny red balloons that flood the student section. The purpose of them is to distract the opposing team’s free throwers when they’re trying to make a shot — quite amusing.
Final thoughts
As a senior, I will say baskteball knows how to put on a good show. I’ve never been a huge basketball person, but all that comes along with going to the game from great food, chants, and crazy fans, I will say that I had a blast. I’m glad I was able to make it to a rival basketball game. That made all things more exciting! My first and last basketball game was a success and I suggest everyone not graduating to go to as many games possible while they still can. Go Wildcats!
