Crew Girl creator explains whether Teagan chooses Cam or Josh after that kiss in the ending

Another day, another love triangle. So, if you’ve made it through all eight episodes of Crew Girl season 1, you’re probably wondering who Teagan actually ends up with: Cam or Josh?

From the moment Teagan Tao arrives at Easton Prep, her life gets complicated very quickly. She joins the school’s all-boys rowing team as its coxswain and soon finds herself caught between two very different boys, Cam and Josh.

Cam is the talented underdog who understands Teagan’s life as a rower. And Josh is the arrogant team captain who starts off as one of her biggest rivals before their arguments turn into something more.

And surprise surprise, by the end of Crew Girl, Teagan has kissed both of them.

Now, creator and showrunner Vivian Lin told Swooon that she actually wants viewers to stay torn between the two.

She said, “I do. I go back and forth. People can have their favourites, but I like that for a love triangle, because you always want to know who will eventually be the best choice for her.” 

The creator explains Teagan’s relationship with Cam and Josh

Teagan and Cam connect through rowing and their shared experience of feeling like outsiders. By the finale, Cam has also gained a lot more confidence after taking the stroke seat and leading the team to its first podium finish. And that new confidence is exactly what gives him the courage to kiss Teagan.

Lin explained, “What gave him the courage to kiss Teagan was that he was able to take the mantle for the first time and felt good about himself.”  

She added, “But, you know, with great power comes great responsibility. And so I think there is always an insecurity that he can discover or that can rear its ugly head.”

Now, Josh is a completely different situation. Lin explained, “Everything about Teagan and Josh is just instinctual. It’s never thought out. It’s just a feeling and a moment and an opportunity.”  

When asked if Teagan’s feelings for Josh are genuine, she said, “I think so. I don’t want to diminish that she has real feelings for Josh and that it’s something real, but I also think she’s heartbroken.”

“You can hold two things at once, so I think she’s still really wounded from that. And maybe part of it is distraction, part of it is exploratory.”

So, does Josh still have a chance?

After everything that happens with his health, family and rowing career, Josh realises that he needs to change. When he asks Teagan for another chance, she doesn’t simply say yes.

Lin explained that Teagan has grown enough to set a boundary with him. She said, “I think Teagan, also having grown, is like, ‘Well, you can’t come back to me until you’re ready.’ It’s a little bit like she’s got a standard now, that he has to win back her respect. He broke her heart.” 

She added, “He has hidden himself away for so long, and he’s on new footing. His family has been upended, his rowing has been upended. He has no idea where he is, and he’s hurt a lot of people along the way to keep a secret.” 

“So he’s got a lot of rebuilding to do and a little bit of some redemption.”

So, does that mean Cam is Teagan’s endgame?

Well, not really. The Cam kiss almost didn’t happen. Lin revealed that writer Jennica Harper was a big Cam fan and questioned why Teagan wasn’t going to kiss him in the finale.

“And I was like, ‘Oh, you’re right, you’re right.’ And so that’s where that last piece came from,” Lin said. “She was absolutely right. So the Cam fans can thank her. We were going to leave them wanting.”

But Lin isn’t ready to call Cam, or Josh, Teagan’s endgame.“I think all the characters are not at a point where they can make decisions, like endgame decisions,” she said. “It’s like real life. You don’t always know who endgame is when you meet them, or they are endgame for a moment, and then someone else pops up, thus upending the word endgame.”

And yes, that could even mean another love interest. When asked about the possibility, Lin joked, “I mean, there are eight boys on that rowing team.”

Apparently, there was even a “Team Ryder” camp in the writers’ room.

So, for now, Teagan is still deciding. But which team are on: Cam or Josh?
