If you’ve tuned in to Why Did I Get Married Again? or you’re planning to, you might be wondering: where the heck is Janet Jackson’s Dr. Patricia Agnew? Tyler Perry has given us an answer while also teasing a potential return. The new Netflix movie is the third entry to Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? franchise, arriving a whopping 16 years after we last caught up with the group in 2010’s Why Did I Get Married Too? The original movie was released in 2007, following four married couples whose annual getaway opened up some uncomfortable conversations about life and love. This time round, the gang are reuniting in Italy for the destination wedding of Angela and Marcus’ daughter Jasmine to her fiancé Wesley. But once guests start arriving, it doesn’t take long for old habits, secrets and relationship drama to start emerging. Most of the familiar faces are along for the ride, including Tyler Perry, Jill Scott, Tasha Smith, Richard T. Jones, Sharon Leal, Lamman Rucker and Michael Jai White, while Taraji P. Henson joins the cast as Wesley’s mum Roselyn. But there’s one pretty glaring omission from the reunion: Janet Jackson. Considering Patricia was one of the central members of the friendship group in both previous movies, fans have understandably been wondering why the star didn’t come back for round three. Tyler Perry explains why Janet Jackson is missing The reason why is very simple: she was busy. This is according to Perry himself, who was asked by The Culture Creators if we’d be getting a cameo from Jackson. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Culture Creators ®️ (@theculturecreators) “Janet, at the time, she was doing residency in Vegas. So we couldn’t work out the time,” he explained. It’s true that the singer was performing live shows at the Resorts World Theatre, starting from December 30 2024 and wrapping up on September 20 2025. Here’s the thing: according to Italy for Movies, production for the Netflix film took place from September 29 2025 to October 2 2025, which means Jackson technically could have made it. But there are a whole host of reasons why it still wouldn’t have made sense, especially if the official filming date wasn’t set in stone before Jackson had already committed to the residency. Plus, you know, she may have wanted a bit of a rest after a nine-month stint. There is some good news, though. Perry said at the end of his answer, “Who knows what will happen in the future?” Patricia is still alive in Why Did I Get Married Again? Credit: Lionsgate Patricia might not physically appear in the movie, but the gang do explain what she’s been up to – and thankfully, she hasn’t been unceremoniously killed off between the events of Why Did I Get Married Too? and now. Early on in the threequel, Marcus reveals Patricia is busy on a lecture tour, but Angela suspects there’s another reason she couldn’t bring herself to attend Jasmine’s wedding. “No, I don’t think that’s what it is,” she says. “After losing Gavin and her baby boy, I think it would just be a little too hard for her.” If you remember, Patricia and her husband Gavin had already lost their young son before the events of the first movie, with their grief putting a huge strain on their marriage. Things got even more devastating in Why Did I Get Married Too? when Gavin was killed after being hit by a truck. Angela points out that Patricia’s son would have been around the same age as Jasmine, suggesting the wedding could simply have brought back too many painful memories for her. Marcus adds, “But you know Pat’s one of the best in the therapy game. She’ll be alright.” So while Jackson didn’t return in this film, the plot at least gives Patricia a pretty believable reason for missing the reunion. More importantly, the door is very much left open for her to come back. Patricia is still alive, still in contact with the group and apparently thriving professionally – and Perry’s “Who knows what will happen in the future?” certainly sounds like he’d be open to bringing Jackson back. There’s no fourth Why Did I Get Married? movie confirmed just yet, but if Netflix does give another sequel the greenlight, there’s nothing stopping Patricia from returning. And after missing this reunion, surely we’re owed one. For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page. Featured image credit: Lionsgate Post navigation Next story
