These sneaky details in The Whisper Man hint at the killer much earlier, and you missed them

Netflix’s The Whisper Man has a huge reveal towards the end when we finally find out who the new Whisper Man really is, but if you go back and rewatch it, there are actually loads of tiny hidden details that you definitely missed.

Some are clues about the killer, while others only make sense once you know what the ending means. So, here are the hidden details you probably missed in The Whisper Man.

Francis is literally hiding at Jake’s school

Before we know that Francis Carter Jr. is the new Whisper Man, you can actually spot him at Jake’s school. When the police arrive and the children are being taken inside, Francis is there among the adults.

At this point, he just looks like another member of staff, so there’s no real reason to focus on him. But later we find out that Francis works at Jake’s school as a teaching assistant. So, the killer was right there in front of us.

It also explains how Francis was able to get close to children and identify potential victims without having to suspiciously follow them around. Once you know the twist, that school scene becomes a massive clue.

The girl in the blue sweater is in the first car scene

Jake keeps seeing a mysterious girl wearing a blue sweater throughout the film, and we’re left wondering whether she’s an imaginary friend or something more supernatural.

But she can actually be spotted in the back seat during the first car scene. At the time, it doesn’t really mean anything because we don’t know who she is. Then, at the end, Tom finds an old photo of Rebecca, Jake’s mum, wearing the same blue sweater. So suddenly that first appearance looks very different.

Alex North, who wrote the original novel, even praised how early the film introduces her. “As soon as I started watching it, and you see her in the background in the car and in the first scene, I loved the way they were doing it,” he told Netflix Tudum.

The victims’ neatly cut nails were a clue about the copycat

Frank Carter used to cut his victims’ nails before killing them, but this wasn’t something the public knew about. So when the latest victim is found with neatly cut nails, Pete immediately realises this isn’t just someone copying the Whisper Man from things they saw in the news. The killer knows details that were never made public.

The film even points this out during the investigation, with one character saying, “The shirt, the tapes. That was all pretty much out there. It was all public. But not the cutting of the fingernails. That wasn’t public.”

The girl in blue was deliberately kept mysterious

The film also drops little hints that the girl isn’t just a random imaginary friend. Her appearances are carefully placed around Jake’s fear, grief and trauma. And the filmmakers deliberately wanted you to be unsure about what she actually was.

Ashcroft told Decider, “We were really trying to walk that line, the tension of that question, so that it could always be a question for the audience.”

He said the question was whether she was “a supernatural, other being” or “a manifestation of psychosis for the young boy”. So when the final photo connects her to Rebecca, you’re supposed to go back through all those earlier scenes and question what you actually saw.
