Will Jules be the ruthless villain in Beauty in Black season 4? Gina twist changes everything

The end of Beauty in Black season 3 changes Jules’ position completely, so is he going to be the big villain in season 4, as he is now working with Gina?

For most of the series, Charles Malik Whitfield’s character was the man the Bellarie family could rely on when things got messy. He was Horace’s trusted enforcer, a former cop who knew how the family operated and, importantly, knew where plenty of its secrets were buried.

But after everything that happened to his son Glen, Jules is no longer working for the Bellaries. Actually, he is now working against them. And with Gina and her criminal network behind him, Jules could be heading into season 4 as the show’s biggest villain yet.

Netflix has already confirmed that Beauty in Black is returning for season 4. 

So, where does that leave Jules and why has he turned against the Bellaries?

Jules’ transformation is basically rooted in Glen’s death. At the beginning of season 3, Jules is behind bars following the FBI bust. He is grieving his son and is convinced that Kimmie had something to do with Glen’s death.

But Jules eventually escapes custody after manipulating an FBI agent by promising to lead investigators to important evidence. Once he is free, he starts looking for answers himself.

That search eventually takes him to Sylvie. Sylvie tells Jules that Rain pushed Glen after finding him with Sylvie and believing she was protecting her. Glen then fell from the window and suffered the injuries that eventually led to his death. Jules does not take the revelation well. He shoots Sylvie dead.

Now, Whitfield believes Jules has finally found something driving him. He told Tudum, “I believe he’s found his purpose. But I don’t think the pulse of what that really is has been fully revealed yet.”

So, what does Gina have to do with it?

Gina first appears to be a separate problem for Rain and Kimmie. She arrives at Make It Rain’s and reveals that she is now a part-owner of the club. Officer Alex also warns Rain that Gina may have connections to the mafia. But by the finale, we find out that Gina and Jules are actually connected.

Whitfield was asked about Jules and Gina’s relationship and made it clear that he thinks she is important to Jules. “I think that his relationship with Gina is very important,” he said. “I think Gina’s a character who gets it. She understands, ‘This is what it is.’”

In fact, Whitfield himself offered a pretty blunt warning about how quickly alliances can change in Beauty in Black. “Everybody’s important until they’re not.”

Is Jules actually the new big bad?

At this point, it certainly looks that way. The setup is very clear. Jules started the series as a fixer for the Bellaries. Now he has turned against the family, has years of knowledge about how their operation works, has a personal reason for wanting revenge, and is working with Gina.

He now has “the motive, insider knowledge, and firepower” to become one of the Bellaries’ most formidable enemies.

What makes Jules even more interesting is that Whitfield does not see his character’s actions as being only about losing his son. The actor said, “I believe he wants the world to feel how he feels. I believe it’s deeper than just losing his son. I think he’s in pain.”

Whitfield also explained Jules’ thinking during the attack with a rather striking comparison. “Nobody believes in electricity until you turn the lights off,” he said. “Everybody wants the rain, but they don’t understand what the thunder will bring.”

He then added, “It’s not just personal. I think it serves many aspects. … Messages are being sent.”
