Who is Frances Neagley? Here’s why Reacher’s mysterious ally is getting her own spinoff

You wouldn’t be wrong to think of Frances Neagley as Jack Reacher’s equally terrifying best mate, but who actually is she, how did she become part of Reacher’s world, and why is she important enough to get her own spinoff?

Played by Maria Sten, Frances Neagley has gone from a supporting character in the Prime Video series to one of its most important recurring characters. And now, she’s getting her own show.

Neagley premieres on Prime Video on 16 September, with all eight episodes releasing on the same day. It comes straight after the Reacher season four finale, so Prime Video is basically giving us no time to recover.

But who actually is Frances Neagley, how did she become part of Reacher’s world, and why does she have her own series?

So, who is Frances Neagley?

Frances Neagley is a former U.S. Army Master Sergeant and military police officer who served with Reacher in the Army’s 110th Special Investigations Unit. When Reacher formed the elite unit, Neagley was one of his first choices.

The pair became close during their time in the Army, and she is one of the few people Reacher genuinely trusts. That’s a pretty big deal because Reacher isn’t exactly known for having loads of close friends.

Neagley is also highly skilled at investigations and firearms. After leaving the military, she moves to Chicago and builds a career as a private investigator and corporate security consultant. So when she appears in Reacher, she already has her own life outside of him.

When did Neagley first appear in Reacher?

Frances Neagley comes from Lee Child’s books, but she doesn’t appear until the sixth Jack Reacher novel, Without Fail, published in 2002. In the book, Reacher calls on his former colleague for help.

The TV series, however, brings her into the story much earlier. Maria Sten’s Neagley first appears in Reacher season one, episode five, even though the season is based on Killing Floor, the first book.

In the series, Reacher contacts her after his brother Joe’s death because he needs someone he can trust. Neagley joins him in the investigation and helps him survive an assassination attempt by a corrupt Memphis police officer.

Why was Neagley introduced so early?

In the books, we get plenty of Reacher’s thoughts, deductions and reasoning directly from his perspective. That is harder to translate to television, so the series gave him someone he could work things through with. Neagley became that person.

She also became a much bigger part of the story in season two, when members of their old 110th unit start being murdered. Neagley tracks Reacher down using a coded bank deposit and tells him that their former colleague Calvin Franz has been killed. They then reunite with the surviving members of the 110th to find out who is targeting them.

Their relationship is completely platonic. Neagley has haphephobia, an intense aversion to being touched, which is explored in both the books and the TV series.

So, what is the Neagley spinoff about?

The eight-part series follows Neagley as she investigates the suspicious death of a close friend from her past. She uses the skills she gained in the Army’s 110th Special Investigations Unit, along with what she learned from Reacher, to find out what really happened.

Unlike Reacher, Neagley has put down roots in Chicago. She has a home, a career and her own circle of people, so the spinoff gets to explore a side of her that we haven’t really seen before.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Maria Sten said the series lets viewers see “what does Neagley feel like and look like when she is in her own world, not just coming to, you know, save Reacher’s a**?”

One of the new characters is Detective Hudson Riley, played by Greyston Holt. Sten said that Neagley initially sees him as “an obstacle in the beginning, or really a tool with the means to an end”.

But working with him eventually pushes Neagley to learn “something about herself and learn something about what it means to relate to other people”.

The series also explores Neagley’s past and the trauma she has never dealt with. Showrunner Nick Wootton said there was “one kernel of information” about her backstory that “blossomed into a season”.

Sten added, “We understand she clearly has some issues she needs to work through. She has some trauma she has not dealt with.”

And the spinoff is apparently darker than Reacher. Holt told TV Insider that the show explores “the humanity and the people behind the tough exteriors.” And he described it as “friggin’ dark. Very dark”.
