Hurry up, Netflix! The Blood Sacrifice cast and creator have big ideas for season two

Blood Sacrifice is the slow-burn crime series you should be binge-watching this week. And if you’ve already done so, you’ll no doubt be wondering whether Netflix plans on greenlighting season two.

The new Netflix mini-series is a tight five episodes long, but what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality, and clearly many agree. Season one is currently in third place on the Netflix top 10 chart in the US. 

The story itself centres on Thomas (Jakob Oftebro), a Stockholm detective who must team up with his estranged ex-cop father Alfred (Peter Andersson) to catch a ritualistic serial killer targeting police officers. 

Although Blood Sacrifice wraps up its central murder mystery, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve seen the last of Thomas and Alfred.

It’s worth noting that Netflix is yet to renew the series for a second season, but that’s not unusual given it only just dropped on August 20th. Plus, it’s marketed as “season one” rather than a “limited series”, meaning it could be open to continuation down the line.

Until then, Oftebro, Andersson and Blood Sacrifice creator George Kay told Filmtopp that they want season two to happen, with the outlet saying it looks like a “big possibility”. 

When asked if he’d be keen, Oftebro said yes one on condition: “If I get to do it with Peter and their relationship can continue to be complicated.”

Andersson added, “I feel the same… Nothing has been decided yet, but I think there are plans for how this could continue.”

Kay also expressed desires to continue the story, telling Filmtopp, “If Netflix wanted to make another season, we’d very much like to be part of it. 

“The series is designed as a love story [between father and son] that continues to develop and is constantly tested by the cases they find themselves facing. And if other people would also like to see more, then I’m absolutely up for it.”

Season 2 might introduce a brand new character

Although the main murder mystery is solved by the end of Blood Sacrifice’s debut chapter, Thomas and Alfred could find themselves thrown into an entirely new case if the show is renewed, while their complicated father-son relationship remains at the centre.

In fact, it appears this was the idea from the very beginning. When asked by MovieZine if he’d be interested in a second season, Kay replied, “The series is made to be able to come back, if we are lucky enough to do so. Absolutely.”

“Long-running TV series often have a love story at the centre. We have that here too. The only question is whether these two men can continue together and find a way to not yell at each other,” he continued. 

“Underneath all that, there is a great affection. That is the story we are telling: a love story between a father and son.”

And a new murder investigation might not be the only complication thrown their way. In another MovieZine interview, Andersson floated the possibility of introducing a new character. 

“Hopefully they can build on it with something new, and perhaps introduce a new character. And maybe Jakob’s mother and my ex-wife [played by Marie Richardson] could come into the picture and tell us more about our relationship,” he said.

“There needs to be something to build on besides an exciting crime, and that’s the relationships between the characters. There’s potential there. George [Kay] would have to answer that, but I think he’d enjoy doing another season. He’s got more to work with now.”
