The Odyssey has been dominating the IMAX chat in recent weeks, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day is about to come swinging into a gigantic screening near you very soon. Before it does, be sure to figure out the best way to watch the latest MCU movie. So far, the fourth MCU Spider-Man outing has been smashing all kinds of box office records, even bagging the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time with a North American tally of $360 million… in three days. It’s the kind of cinematic event that’s ripe for a rewatch, and if you agree, there’s good news. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has been occupying IMAX screens, but with its exclusive run coming to an end, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is about to take over. How to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day in IMAX Credit: Sony Pictures The film is set to drop in IMAX cinemas in North America on Thursday, August 6, with tickets going on sale on August 4. IMAX hasn’t provided a detailed allocation of screens between Brand New Day and The Odyssey, but there are just over 440 screens across the US and Canada. The only exception is the 70mm IMAX venues, which will continue showing Nolan’s film exclusively. The best way to find showtimes and tickets near you is directly through the IMAX website here. Of course, even if you can’t get to one, there are plenty of other ways to watch the Tom Holland movie. What’s the best way to watch Brand New Day? This is subjective, but here’s our ranking based on our own experiences and the consensus online: 1. ScreenX If you want something you literally can’t get anywhere else, ScreenX is arguably the most interesting choice. Brand New Day is the first-ever film created under the new ‘Shot for ScreenX’ initiative, meaning director Destin Daniel Cretton and CJ 4DPLEX worked together during production rather than converting the movie afterwards. Extra footage was captured specifically for ScreenX’s 270-degree presentation, with action spilling onto the left and right walls of the auditorium instead of being confined to the main screen, making for a more immersive experience. 2. Dolby Cinema If picture and sound matter more than screen size, Dolby Cinema may actually be the better option. Dolby Vision uses dual 4K laser projectors to create bright, vivid colours, while Dolby Atmos is an advanced spatial audio technology that creates a 360-degree sound experience. Rather than simply making the screen bigger, it’s designed to make films look sharper and sound more immersive than a standard screening. 3. 4DX If you’re after pure fun, 4DX is hard to beat. As an immersive multi-sensory movie technology, these screenings feature synchronised motion seats and over 21 environmental effects like water, wind and even scents. It’s definitely the most theme-park-like option, though some viewers find it distracting during dialogue-heavy scenes. As said, this is kind of subjective. 4. Premium Large Format (PLF) It might be lower down on the list, but if you can’t get to a Dolby, IMAX or ScreenX (and you can’t stomach 4DX), PLF is your next best option. These go by different names depending on the cinema chain, but they all aim to provide a bigger screen, more powerful sound and a more premium experience than a regular auditorium. 5. Standard 2D Sometimes, simple is best. A standard 2D screening is still exactly how the vast majority of people will experience Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and there’s nothing wrong with that. If your local cinema doesn’t offer any premium formats – or you’re simply looking to save a bit of money – you’ll still get the full film exactly as intended, just without the larger screens or enhanced audio. There are other variations of these options available, but at least you should now know a bit more about the best way for you to watch Marvel’s latest hit.
