Avatar creators reveal the real reason Suki was missing from the new Last Airbender movie

Avatar fans hoping to see Suki reunite with the Gaang in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender have finally found out why she was missing.

The long-awaited animated movie has had a pretty chaotic journey to release, from online leaks causing controversy to the project moving away from a planned cinema launch and arriving straight on Paramount Plus instead.

But even after finally being released, one question has continued to dominate discussions: Where was Suki? The Kyoshi Warrior was a fan favourite in the original animated series, making her absence from most of the movie a noticeable gap.

Now, Avatar co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino has explained that Suki’s exclusion wasn’t because the team had forgotten about her. Instead, it came down to trying to fit a huge story into a limited runtime.

“I know fans are going to be upset. Suki’s not in the movie,” DiMartino told Variety.

He revealed that the creative team had explored bringing her into the film but ultimately couldn’t make it work without taking time away from the main characters.

“We did try versions where Suki was in the movie,” he explained. “You just have to make these decisions where it’s like, we only have 85 minutes to tell the story. We were already having a hard time giving our beloved main characters their spotlight and enough screen time.”

Although Suki doesn’t appear, DiMartino insisted that she and the Kyoshi Warriors still exist within the story’s timeline and were simply dealing with their own mission elsewhere.

“The Kyoshi Warriors are out there!” he said. “They were off saving somebody else while the events of this movie were going on. Doesn’t mean they’re not around. They have their own comic book series now, so they are busy ladies.”

Director Lauren Montgomery also hinted that people could have seen a very different version of the movie, revealing that earlier ideas included more moments for Suki, including a potential appearance during a parade in Republic City.
