Wicked and Gladiator II both hit cinemas in the last couple of weeks, and there’s nothing like a blockbuster battle to get people going to the cinema. Releasing within one week of each other, the two hit films have been pitted to come very close at the box office. However, after the two weekends came to a close, there was one VERY clear winner that made over double the other. Screw ancient Roman wars and fake wizards – the Glicked weekend box office was the real battle!

So, who won the Glicked weekend?

The Glicked weekend was nowhere near as close at the box office as Barbenheimer was. Wicked won by miles and made $114 million on its opening weekend. Gladiator II, on the other hand, made just $55.5 million for the box office. The last time a musical did as well as Wicked did was when Frozen II came out in November 2019!

Glicked sure brought a massive boost to the box office this November, but it’s nothing compared to what Barbenheimer gave us. Barbie was the biggest opening weekend ever, with an $182 million gain. Oppenheimer made $80.5 million, which is still a hell of a lot more than Gladiator II did.

Wicked became the biggest global and domestic opening for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, which beat the $12 million for Widows for the latter. It was also the biggest opening ever for a musical feature by Stephen Schwartz, the biggest global and domestic opening for director Jon M Chu and the biggest first day for a movie based on a Broadway musical at $46.4 million.

Together, the two films made up 81 per cent of cinema ticket sales during their respective opening weekends according to Deadline. This would definitely be enough to make Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo tear up.

Wicked has absolutely wowed audiences across the world, and even brought a surprise celebrity Broadway cameo that made all original Wicked fans pass away. I know I did!
