Ahead of Only Murders in the Building season 6, a clip of Selena Gomez on the show has gone viral, reigniting the unfounded clone conspiracy theory. But this is already something the actress and singer has responded to. The clip in question is from season 5, showing Gomez’s Mabel alongside Loretta (Meryl Streep) and Donna (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) as they discover Rainey (Dianne Wiest) crying about her husband. Already, it’s received thousands of likes and comments, with many focusing on Gomez. As one X user wrote, “Selena Gomez is going viral for her acting in the new season of Only Murders in the Building.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Only Murders in London (@onlymurdershulu) But while some are praising Gomez, others have been scrutinising her appearance. This has once again led to rumours that she’s been replaced by a body double. Just this week, TikTok user Melena shared a video with a new photo of Gomez in the show. “This doesn’t even look like her. This looks like a totally different person,” they said. The TikToker added, “I think she has an impersonator that looks exactly like her. For when Selena doesn’t want to be seen in public.” It’s essentially an offshoot of the baseless conspiracy claiming that the singer and actress was secretly replaced by a clone or body double. Selena Gomez has already responded to the bizarre clone conspiracy But Gomez is well aware of the rumours. Back in April, she poked fun at the conspiracy in a comedy sketch filmed at her Rare Beauty offices alongside content creator Micky Cash Flow. Among the tasks is something about “calling a clone”, prompting a confused reaction from Gomez. It’s a light-hearted response to an increasingly bizarre rumour, but it also highlights something the star has dealt with for years: strangers constantly scrutinising her appearance. And while she’s clearly able to laugh at the conspiracy, that doesn’t mean the wider criticism hasn’t affected her. Gomez has previously spoken openly about living with lupus, an autoimmune condition, and how medication has caused her weight to fluctuate. Despite this, her appearance has repeatedly become a topic of public discussion. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus,” she said, admitting that she would sometimes pretend that the hurtful comments didn’t bother her. “I lied, I would go online and I would post a picture of myself and I would say, ‘It doesn’t matter, I’m not accepting what you’re saying,” she explained. “All the while being in the room posting that, crying my eyes out, because nobody deserves to hear those things.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
