*Warning: Major spoilers ahead for The Diplomat season 4* Austin Dennison has been one of Kate Wyler’s closest allies throughout The Diplomat. But season 4 of the Netflix series delivers a devastating twist when the British Foreign Secretary is killed off. And according to the show’s creator, there’s a deliberate reason for this. Dennison (David Gyasi) has spent much of The Diplomat trying to keep British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) under control. Outside of this is his close relationship with US ambassador Kate (Keri Russell). And when I say close, I mean there was enough romantic tension to keep us wondering for the first couple of seasons. Eventually, they kissed in season 2, but that storyline ultimately went nowhere. By the end of season 3, Dennison was married to someone else. As for Kate, she’d briefly split from Hal (Rufus Sewell), had a fling with British intelligence officer Callum Ellis (Aidan Turner), and then decided she wanted her husband back. Either way, he remained one of Kate’s most important political allies, which is what makes the events of season 4 so much more brutal. How does Austin Dennison die in The Diplomat season 4? Credit: Netflix Dennison is noticeably absent from the beginning of The Diplomat season 4, having been sent by Trowbridge to Amritsar, India, for a meeting with the country’s foreign minister. Sadly, he never makes it home. At the end of episode 3, it’s revealed that Dennison has been killed in a helicopter crash. The accident itself happens off-screen, meaning we don’t even get a proper goodbye. Trowbridge breaks the news to Kate, Hal and Eidra Park (Ali Ahn). It’s particularly devastating for the Prime Minister, who begins spiralling over the loss of his Foreign Secretary. In episode 4, Trowbridge is so consumed by it that he starts hallucinating his dead former adviser Margaret Roylin (Celia Imrie). But Dennison’s death isn’t the only thing pushing Trowbridge to breaking point. Credit: Netflix He’s also furious after discovering that the Americans secretly stole a dangerous Russian nuclear weapon from British waters. Fearing he’ll expose them, Kate uses footage of Trowbridge attacking Roylin to blackmail him into silence. Instead of agreeing to stay silent, he resigns as Prime Minister. This paves the way for Jodie Whittaker’s Bethan Vaughn to take over (but more on this shortly). For now, viewers at home aren’t happy with the way Dennison was killed. As one wrote on X, “They killed my guy Dennison and I’m pissed, but I need 10 more seasons of 20 1h episodes of The Diplomat or I’m gonna lose my mind.” Another wrote, “Austin Dennison dying off screen felt so random, it’s like they were looking for an excuse to explain why the actor is not in the show anymore. Hopefully writers will return to this in season 5 cause it’s definitely sketchy.” The Diplomat creator reveals the real reason Dennison was killed off Credit: Netflix Showrunner and series creator Debora Cahn explained that while it was a really tough decision to make, the writing team ultimately felt like the storyline had become unrealistic. And this was due, in part, to the real-life UK government. Speaking to Collider, Cahn said about Dennison’s death, “It was terrible! It was a terrible decision to have to make. But we had, at that point, been filming in the UK for a few years, and during the time that we were there, there were five different prime ministers, and our show had only had one. “We had what started to feel like an unrealistic universe where Kate came in, and she had to learn what the job is and meet all the people, but then she did, and then she sort of knew what she was dealing with and knew how to handle it. It just felt unrealistic. “The moments when you have your feet on the ground, and you actually know who the players are in a government, the whole f**king thing changes and turns upside down, and I wanted her and the entire team to have to manage that.” It was a surprise for the cast too, with Keri Russell telling People, “That was very shocking. I think people will be really shocked about that.” “I think it’s an interesting weight for the cast to process that because, in this world, things like that happen,” Russell continued. “I mean, they’re not in the army, but they’re in the line of fire. They’re traveling all the time, they’re in dangerous places, and things like this happen. You lose people along the way.” How Jodie Whittaker’s new Prime Minister ties into Dennison’s death Credit: Netflix Dennison’s death is part of the same shakeup that paves the way for The Diplomat season 4’s new British Prime Minister, Bethan Vaughn (Jodie Whittaker). She takes over after Trowbridge’s resignation. This is another reason Cahn gave for the decision. With both Dennison and Trowbridge gone, Kate has suddenly lost the two British politicians she’s spent the past three seasons getting to know. At first, it seems like Vaughn will be a welcome change from the unpredictable Trowbridge. She’s level-headed and shares many of Kate’s political values. But here’s the thing: Vaughn thinks the Americans are the problem. As Cahn explained to Entertainment Weekly, “We’ve created a narrative around Trowbridge being the problem. It’s the fantasy of ‘if we just had somebody like us, imagine how much good we could do in the world.’ So we wanted to bring in somebody who looks like Kate. “She talks like Kate. She has the same value system as Kate. And from that person’s perspective, from that administration’s perspective, we’re the problem. We’re the agents of chaos. “So I was just so taken with that turn and making her start over. We had reached this point where she had such a good relationship with Dennison, and in her way, a really good relationship with Trowbridge. And it just felt dishonest to make it that easy on somebody.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page. Featured image credit: Netflix Post navigation Next story
