Aileen Wuornos and her girlfriend are shown to be obsessed with Lizzie Borden in Netflix’s Monster, and although we see what happened to Aileen, we never see where her girlfriend is now. Sarah Paulson plays Aileen Wuornos in the series, which links her story to that of Lizzie Borden, the 19th-century woman accused of killing her father and stepmother. But while Monster gives Aileen a girlfriend called Shelby, played by Jessie Lee, the real woman in Aileen’s life was Tyria Moore. The two met in Florida in 1986, after Tyria had moved there from Ohio. As per the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, they met at a gay bar and soon moved in together. Tyria eventually left her job, while Aileen supported them financially through s*x work. Aileen later described Tyria as the “love of my life”. Tyria was living with Aileen during the period when the murders took place between 1989 and 1990. Aileen returned to the motel where they were staying after the killing of Richard Mallory in December 1989 and told Tyria that she had shot and killed a man. It was also reported that Aileen told Tyria she had gone through the man’s belongings, keeping some things and throwing others away, before abandoning his car and leaving the body in a wooded area. Tyria later told investigators that she became frightened after seeing reports about two women being sought in connection with a series of murders. She eventually left Aileen and returned to her family up north. Police later contacted her in Pennsylvania, and she agreed to return to Florida while trying to clear herself of any involvement. Tyria Moore was never charged with the murders. She also denied being involved in them. Instead, she agreed to help investigators get Aileen to talk about what had happened. According to Tudum, police arranged recorded calls between the two, during which Tyria encouraged Aileen to confess. Tyria later testified against Aileen at her 1992 murder trial. Her last known major media appearance was a Dateline special called “Damsel of Death”, which aired in August 1992 and featured both her and Aileen. Later reports say she did not continue giving interviews about the case. There have been reports that she entered witness protection, but this has never been confirmed. Netflix Tudum confirms that Tyria cooperated with authorities and that police arranged the recorded calls with Aileen, but it does not say that she formally entered witness protection afterwards. Recent reports have said that she is alive and living privately in Pennsylvania. A 2013 obituary for Jack Moore in Ohio listed “Tyria Moore and Joyce Karchner of Beach Haven, PA” among his surviving children. A Pennsylvania marriage license listing from 2016 also names Tyria Jolene Moore and Joyce Linda Karchner. Basically, she appears to have chosen a life far away from the Aileen Wuornos story.
