Lanterns episode 6 jumps from 2016 to 2026, where Hal Jordan is supposedly dead, but if you’re still holding onto hope that Kyle Chandler’s Green Lantern isn’t actually gone, James Gunn has just responded to the claims. The DC Studios co-CEO has addressed the criticism over how Lanterns has treated Hal. And while he defended the show and Kyle’s performance, he also questioned whether what we’ve seen is actually Hal’s final fate. Episode 6 jumps forward to 2026 and reveals that Hal has been killed. John Stewart returns to Rushville and starts investigating what happened to his former partner, while the Halogram is shown as another version of Hal that can help John with the investigation. So, at this point, the show very much wants us to believe that the real Hal Jordan is dead. But James Gunn has now added a pretty interesting caveat. So, is Hal Jordan really dead? Credit: HBO Responding to criticism from a fan who argued that Lanterns should respect the characters who made the comics popular, James Gunn defended the show and Kyle Chandler’s portrayal of Hal. He wrote on Threads, “Hal’s the star of TV series & he’s in all the episodes so far. It’s more live action screen time than all the live action screen time he’s had combined throughout history. Kyle is amazing in the role.” But then he addressed Hal’s apparent death. “We more than respect him. We love him, despite his imperfections,” Gunn wrote. “Us knowing the time of his death, if that’s exactly what that is, is absolutely not the same thing as killing him off right away. Hal is a big reason why the show is so popular with fans & non fans alike; sorry if you don’t like it.” Now, that is very interesting. James Gunn hasn’t actually said that Hal Jordan is alive. But saying “if that’s exactly what that is” when talking about his death is a pretty curious choice of words. It leaves the door open to the possibility that there is more to the death we saw in episode 6. And there’s even some pretty convincing “proof” that Hal Jordan could still be alive, which makes his comment even more intriguing. He said, “I’d say avid comics readers are well aware of the differences from universe to universe. Whether it’s the DCU or Earth 0 or the Absolute Universe, they all pay homage to these iconic characters, retelling their stories in different ways.” He then compared it to Marvel, explaining that the MCU has also mixed different comic book ideas with original ones. “Heck, even the MCU combined elements of the Ultimate universe, the 616, and original ideas. That’s how these things work.
