Eddie has done some seriously brutal things in The Gentlemen season 2, but Theo James has now explained exactly why his character didn’t kill his brother Freddy. After discovering that Freddy knew about Gospel John’s plan and had helped him, Eddie is understandably furious. He beats Freddy, points a gun at him and looks like he could finally put an end to it all. But instead, Eddie comes up with something arguably even more twisted. He forces Freddy to kill Gospel John himself. So, why didn’t Eddie just kill Freddy? Credit: Netflix Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Theo James has actually explained exactly what the creative team was trying to do with that ending. “That was something we had talked about with Guy and Matthew for a long time. He can’t murder his brother straight up and straight out because then he loses his family. But he has to have some semblance of revenge,” James said. He added, “So that [ending] came from trying to figure out: How do you do both in one? How do you punish him without killing him?” Rather than killing Freddy, Eddie forces him into the back of the van where Gospel John is waiting, tied up, while another man holds a chainsaw. Eddie then tells his brother: “Someone’s gotta die, Freddy.” Freddy is left with no choice but to kill Gospel John himself. James explained that the decision was about forcing Freddy to do something horrific while also destroying the person he had come to see as a spiritual figure. James said, “We settled on forcing [Freddy] to do the most atrocious crime. And also removing the head of his God in a way.” He added, laughing, “He looks up to this man as a man of faith, and then he has to f***ing chainsaw his head off.” The fact that Freddy is forced to live with what he has done is important for Eddie.
