Sam Levinson talks religious beliefs after *that* surprisingly Godly Euphoria finale

There was a lot of religious symbolism

Sam Levinson has opened up about his faith after a surprisingly religious pivot in Euphoria season three, and how it inspires him.

Euphoria has always been sprinkled with religious imagery. At Rue’s lowest point in season two, she finds herself at a church service, with Labrinth’s I’m Tired playing in the background. The lyrics explicitly mention God, as Zendaya sings, “‘Cause Lord, you know I’m tired.”

But the sprinkles here and there elevate to full-on subplots and religious imagery in season three. Motivated by her goal to be a “good” person, Rue starts reading the Bible and talking a lot about God. She even dies listening to the Old Testament. The series ends with a prayer from Ali.

i loved this scene so much because despite ali being muslim, he encouraged her to have faith in God regardless of what religion she chooses to follow 🫶🏼 #euphoria pic.twitter.com/TBsuIvsg4R

In an interview with Tablet, Sam Levinson talked about his Jewish upbringing. A former addict himself, Sam spent time in rehab, where Bibles surrounded him.

“I can’t remove Judaism from who I am as a person,” he admitted. “The moment I started living my life with the knowledge that God exists, life got better.”

Despite the tragic season finale and the dark themes laced throughout Euphoria, Sam is adamant the show is an antithesis to cynicism – inspired by Jewish beliefs of restoration and redemption.

“I don’t think of myself as cynical, and I don’t want to put out cynical movies or art,” the showrunner said. “There’s plenty of nihilism in the world. I see Euphoria largely as a rejection of it.”

He concluded: “Part of what is central to Judaism is that the impossible is always possible. You can be born in Egypt a slave and leave a free person. This show deals with dark stuff in our world: social media, OnlyFans, drugs, pimps, violence. But it’s always, I hope, pointing toward the possibility of redemption.”

Sam has recently confirmed there will be no Euphoria season four. He currently has no future shows lined up, but he’s hinted at upcoming projects in various interviews.
