There seems to be a new Hunger Games casting announcement pretty much every other day. Honestly, I’m starting to lose track. The casting is so spot on – loads of the new cast members look virtually identical to the actors who played the same characters in the original The Hunger Games trilogy. Here’s some side by side pics of the old and new Hunger Games cast, as evidence the casting is perfect and you should be excited for this film, like, immediately.

Burdock Everdeen

That’s Katniss and Prim’s dad, who died in a mining accident before the original books (and films) begin. He only appears in the films during a brief flashback, plus his family keeps a photo of him.

In Sunrise on the Reaping, he will be portrayed by a Scottish actor called Scot Greenan. He had small parts in Mary Queen of Scots and Trainspotting 2.

Caesar Flickerman

Kieran Culkin (aka Roman from Succession) will be playing Caesar Flickerman.

I’m obsessed with this, because Kieran Culkin really does look like a younger version of Stanley Tucci.

Effie Trinket

The BookTok girlies have been fan casting Elle Fanning as a younger Effie Trinket for years, so I’m buzzing this vision is now a reality.

I mean, look at Elizabeth Banks as Effie.

And look at Elle Fanning.

Haymitch Abernathy

He’s the star of Sunrise on the Reaping, so it’s reassuring the casting is bang on.

Then here’s Joseph Zada with a very Haymitch-like hairdo in Prime Video’s We Were Liars.

Then here’s Woody Harrelson as Haymitch in the OG films.

Mags Flanagan

Remember Mags? The sweet old woman from District Four who dies protecting Finnick in the Quarter Quell?

She’ll be portrayed in the new film by the American actor Lili Taylor. I’m not emotionally prepared for those scenes.

Plutarch Heavensbee

Jesse Plemons seems to mostly portray quiet creepy blonde guys.

So the casting of him as Plutarch Heavensbee is bang on.

Asterid March

That’s Katniss and Prim’s mum. I appreciate the name is confusing, since this character didn’t actually get a name until 2025, despite appearing in all the original books and films.

Asterid will be portrayed by an actor called Grace Ackary.

President Snow

Ralph Fiennes will be the third actor to portray President Snow, following Donald Sunderland in the original trilogy and Tom Blyth in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

The original

Well, he does have a background in playing evil authoritarian rulers in famous young adult book adaptations.
