The biggest horror films of 2025, ranked by their brutal score on Letterboxd
Justice for Final Destination: Bloodlines!
2025 has suddenly snapped into becoming a blockbuster year for horror. It started slow, and I honestly wasn’t that excited for any of the big films coming out this year after a snoozy start with the likes of Presence. And yet, this summer it became a time for spooks as much as it did sun; it feels like this entire period has been dominated by massive horror films that we can’t stop talking about. Has any release NOT gone viral? With the wave still booming into the Halloween season, here’s a rundown of all the biggest 2025 horror films so far ranked by their score on Letterboxd. Because let’s face it, it’s the only app worth checking when it comes to films these days. IYKYK.
Note: Nosferatu was a 2025 horror cinematic release in the UK – but since it was officially debuting in 2024 and is classed as a 2024 film it won’t be featuring on this list.
12. The Woman in the Yard (2.4 on Letterboxd)
The abysmal Blumhouse Pictures churning out another tedious horror – shock. The Woman in the Yard shoots big with its tackling of grief, as a woman living in a rural farmhouse with her two children gets set upon by an eerie spectral female figure in their, you guessed it… yard.
11. I Know What You Did Last Summer (2.5 on Letterboxd)
Most Read
Bored to hell and back with requels, especially those as tedious as this. The original films aren’t even good, so despite the fact this tries hard to take a leaf out of Scream’s book by bringing back Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr – the end result is so boring and toothless.
10. M3GAN 2.0 (2.7 on Letterboxd)
Whilst the M3GAN sequel was wise to lean into the original film’s camp nature, the second robot doll offering landed as a bit of a dud even though it was a bit of a laugh to watch with your mates.
9. The Monkey (2.7 on Letterboxd)
Osgood Perkins was high off the success of last year’s Longlegs – and yet The Monkey is ranked low when it comes to 2025 horror films on Letterboxd. It was quite fun I have to admit, some great kills – but it all just feels a bit of a mindless romp by the end. Theo James was excellent, though.
8. Dangerous Animals (3.0 on Letterboxd)
The Loved Ones director comes back with this very original Aussie horror – a serial killer who operates by feeding victims to sharks. Not seen this one yet but I’ve been chomping at the bit for it (pun not intended) so I can stomach a three score on Letterboxd as definitely worth watching.
7. Final Destination: Bloodlines (3.2 on Letterboxd)
I’m sorry but this film was an utter romp. Second best in the franchise and deserves to be ranked top five in this Letterboxd horror films of 2025. Love the way it twists up the formula and the deaths are so creative. Unexpected hoot.
6. Companion (3.4 on Letterboxd)
Sophie Thatcher is godly, Jack Quaid is unwatchable, and this is the most boring and tedious horror film I’ve seen in ages. I am so bored of robot, AI type stuff. Sick of it. You’re all too easily pleased.
5. Together (3.4 on Letterboxd)
Perhaps sadly in the shadow of Weapons, but Alison Brie and James Franco doing body horror playing a married couple as the two are married IRL. I saw every single person I follow on Letterboxd give it a 3.5 so the fact the score is 3.4 really checks out.
4. 28 Years Later (3.5 on Letterboxd)
The long awaited Danny Boyle sequel to one of the best zombie films… ever. Did it live up to the hype? It was a 3.5, by my rating too. Decent film more concerned with setting up a new trilogy than being an amazing film in its own right – and whilst the score is high I don’t know if it quite met expectations. Intrigued to see where it goes next.
3. Bring Her Back (3.7 on Letterboxd)
Kicking off the ranked top three 2025 horror films on Letterboxd is the follow up film from the brothers behind the excellent Talk To Me. And with Bring Her Back, the emotion and the absolutely harrowing despair were ramped up tenfold. Truly an exercise in concise and unrelenting domestic family terror and grief. Brilliant.
2. Weapons (3.7 on Letterboxd)
My personal favourite horror film of 2025, Zach Cregger comes through even harder than Barbarian with the iconic Weapons. So much to unpack and dissect about its meaning – but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t watched it. All you need to know is that Aunt Gladys is Longlegs level of icon.
1. Sinners (4.1 on Letterboxd)
Ryan Coogler really came through with the only 2025 horror film certified over that wonderful four star mark on Letterboxd. Sinners really brought the vampire movie BACK – and what a joy it is. A perfect, genre jumping romp with an outstanding dual lead performance from Michael B Jordan and a completely memorable and totally terrifying villain turn from Jack O’Connell.
