The heartbreaking reason Morgan Freeman was wearing just one glove during the Oscars

He held his hand behind his back for most of his appearance

Whilst watching the Oscars 2025, people have noticed Morgan Freeman was wearing just one glove. Naturally, this has caused people to question why he was wearing only one.

Morgan Freeman appeared at the ceremony this weekend to pay tribute to his friend, Gene Hackman. It was confirmed last week actor Gene had passed away, alongside his wife. Morgan Freeman appeared at the ceremony and introduced its annual In Memoriam segment.

“This week, our community lost a giant. And I lost a dear friend, Gene Hackman,” Morgan said during his piece. “I had the pleasure of working alongside Gene on two films, Unforgiven and Under Suspicion, and like everyone who ever shared a scene with him, I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone’s work. He received two Oscars, but more importantly, he won the hearts of film lovers all over the world.”

For much of the appearance, Morgan Freeman had his hands behind his back, but it was noticed when he didn’t he wore a single glove. He wore it on his left hand. The glove has been worn by Freeman for a number of years, and is down to his health.

In 2008, the actor was involved in a serious car crash. His car left the road and flipped over numerous times. It then landed in a ditch. Following the incident, he was airlifted to hospital.

Despite having surgery, Morgan Freeman was left with irreversible nerve damage to his left land – leaving it paralysed. He now suffers from fibromyalgia, stemming from the nerve damage. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes widespread pain and tenderness throughout the body.

In 2010, Morgan Freeman told People magazine he wears a compression glove to keep his blood flowing. “I suffered nerve damage and it hasn’t gotten better,” he said. “I can’t move it. If you don’t move your hand, it will swell up. Do you know you move your hand about a million times a day?”

Doctors had hoped his condition would improve over the years, but it’s been reported his hand remains immobile.
