Here’s the staggering amount of money Netflix teased Cameron Diaz out of 10-year retirement with

The deal has her locked in for two films

After spending the last 10 years living her best life away from the eyes of the public, Cameron Diaz returned to the world of acting this month in Netflix’s new film, Back In Action.

The film follows her character Emily who returns to a life of espionage alongside her former CIA husband Matt, played by Jamie Foxx. It was Cameron’s first major role in over ten years, with the last being her 2014 films Annie and Sex Tape. Considering her overwhelming appreciation for the time off, something she has extensively talked about in interviews, I was left wondering why she made the comeback.

Well, like most things in this beautifully damaged world, it might have been the coin.

How much was Cameron Diaz paid for Back In Action?

During the press circuit for Back In Action, Cameron Diaz revealed that producers and directors continued to reach out with jobs after she initially left Hollywood for a normal life. Soon enough though, those offers stopped coming.

“I was free to be [like] ‘I’m a mum, I’m a wife, I’m living my life’ – it was so lovely,” she said, noting that it was the “best” 10 years of her life. “Ten years in, this made sense for my family.”

Though you might question why she returned to paparazzi and press rounds if she enjoyed the family life so much, an Insider claimed she didn’t initially want to.

“New boss Lin has been brought in to bring costs under control and improve quality,” a source told Radar Online. “It’s one thing to say you won’t overpay for a package or a star, and it’s another to actually do it.”

It was only when Netflix chairman Scott Stuber said name your price that Cameron did exactly that, stipulating she wanted a huge $45 million for two films.

“Scott Stuber didn’t actually want to pay Cameron Diaz $45million for two movies. But that’s what it took to lure her out of retirement. He asked her to name her price and she did,” the source added.

Now it seems Cameron Diaz is back with a bang because she’s contractually obligated to appear in another film for Netflix. Movie site Cinemablend has speculated that it could be a sequel to Back In Action.

“It could be argued that it wasn’t a bad decision on Dan Lin’s part because, as of this writing, Back in Action is the No. 1 trending movie in the U.S. on the aforementioned platform,” they said. “The ending of Back in Action leaves the door open for a sequel. And, considering that the Bad Teacher alum is contracted for two movies with Netflix, it’s possible that a follow-up could be in the cards.”

She is also slated to be appearing in the long-awaited Shrek 5, reprising her role as Princess Fiona, and the black comedy Outcome.
