Um, Bill Skarsgard was originally supposed to play an entirely different role in Nosferatu?!
This would have changed the whole vibe of the film
There’s no doubt that Bill Skarsgard has really nailed the role of playing creepy male entities, and his appearance as Count Orlok in Nosferatu is no different. Although I won’t lie he did also give me slight Waluigi vibes I’m sorry.
However, it turns out that originally we weren’t even supposed to get Bill Skarsgard playing Count Orlok in Nosferatu, as originally it was between two other iconic actors, one of whom got another role in the film.
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bill Skarsgard revealed that Mads Mikkelson and his Nosferatu co-star Willen Dafoe were originally the main two options lined up to play Count Orlok.
Let me preface this by saying I adore Willem Dafoe but the unhinged energy he gives off would have been too much for the vampire I reckon.
As for Bill, he was always going to appear in the film but was actually set to play the role of Thomas Hutter, who was played by Nicholas Hoult in the movie.
Bill explained how Nosferatu was originally set to release ten years ago, immediately following the success of The Witch. He revealed: “I met him [Robert Eggers] in New York almost ten years ago, and he was doing Nosferatu.
“That would be his follow-up movie after The Witch. I read the script, and the script blew my mind. I thought: ‘This is incredible, it’s so him and so great.’
And the script didn’t change all that much, it was solidified, his vision. I read for Aaron’s [Taylor-Johnson] role, Friedrich Harding, in the movie, and then he thought I could be good for Thomas Hutter.

I read for that, and I booked that, so I was supposed to be Thomas in this movie ten years ago.”
Whilst Nosferatu was then put on hold, Bill was later informed the project was back on and explained that whilst the roles of Friedrich and Thomas had been filled, Robert Eggers had another character in mind for him.
He elaborated: “Out of the blue, he [Robert Eggers] did reach out, and he said: ‘I think you can play Orlok.'”
