Omg, Wicked’s Grimmerie is a real spellbook from 17th-century that teaches demon-summoning

Lost in a Wicked rabbit hole – maybe there’s a spell for that?

There’s only one copy of the Grimmerie spellbook in Wicked, so someone should tell the citizens of Oz that the book, known as The Lesser Key of Solomon on Earth, is readily available in our realm on sites such as Amazon.

From its very own language to the hidden easter eggs, we’ve established that the wonderful world of Oz is a well-crafted fantasy world with droves of established lore. You could get lost in its Wiki page for days and leave knowing everything from the reason Dorothy’s slippers are silver, to the land where Fiyero is prince.

The internet might be full of wonderful things, but unfortunately, it can’t teach you sorcery which you would – of course – use responsibly. Luckily, Wicked’s own Grimmerie spellbook can do that for you, sort of…

What is the Grimmerie in Wicked?

We were first introduced to the Grimmerie when Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth gave a standup performance of Wizomania where they sing Emerald City newcomers Elphaba and Glinda through the nation’s history. Essentially, the Grimmerie was a book written thousands of years ago by magical beings and no one in Oz can read it.

Because the prophecy foretold that a traveller could read the book, the citizens of Oz naturally assumed this to be The Wizard when he arrived in the magical land. Of course, as we know he is nothing but a charlatan and Elphaba is most likely the person at the centre of the prophecy.

Caution ahead Wizaomaniacs, there are major spoilers from here.

Though we won’t be certain of plot details until Wicked: Part Two next year, if they continue to follow Gregory Maguire’s source material, Elphaba’s father actually being The Wizard will be revealed. Because he is from Earth, our home, his daughter’s half-Ozian half-human heritage means she is the foretold hero and is able to read the spells.

On Earth, the spellbook is called the The Lesser Key of Solomon

In Gregory’s initial work, it was heavily teased that the Grimmerie came to Oz by way of an Earthly sorcerer. Though we never learned his or her name, we know that the book is referred to as The Lesser Key of Solomon on Earth.

The Lesser Key of Solomon, also known as the Clavicula Salomonis Regis, is a real book that was compiled by an unknown author in the mid-17th century. Perhaps the very same sorcerer who took it to Oz? It contains works centuries older and covers everything from talking to angels to controlling demons.

Should you want to read Elphaba’s spellbook, you don’t even have to head to your town’s witch or wizard. Instead, it’s contained within a magical realm known as Amazon!

Be responsible with your magic readers.
