Wicked has already introduced us to the scarecrow, Tin Man and lion: Here’s how they link

Wait, we’ve already met all three of them?!

Whether you’ve been a Wicked fan for years or you’re just learning about it for the first time, its entanglement with The Wizard of Oz is fascinating. The stories intertwine in such a cool way and change your whole outlook on the original 1939 film. However, you might be wondering how the scarecrow, Tin Man and lion all link into the second part of Wicked – because they do. Well, guess what? You’ve already met all three of them, you just don’t know it yet. In fact, the only character from The Wizard of Oz you haven’t met yet is Dorothy herself.

Before Wicked was a musical, it was a novel. And before Wicked was a novel, The Wizard of Oz was a film. And before The Wizard of Oz was a film, it was a nov- okay, you get it. The lore goes all the way back to 1900, when the original Wizard of Oz book was released. The scarecrow, Tin Man, and lion were all pretty two-dimensional characters there to support Dorothy, but 1995’s Wicked novel expanded on their backstories a lot more. Get ready for some major Wicked spoilers ahead.

Who is the scarecrow?

The character who becomes the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz is also present in Wicked: Part One – it’s none other than Elphaba’s love interest, Prince Fiyero Tigelaar, played by Jonathan Bailey. You might be wondering how the hell the story got there. Let me break it down for you.

In Wicked: Part Two, Fiyero will catch on to the fact that Elphaba has been used as a scapegoat by the Wizard for all his misconduct, and he follows her on the run. He manages to prevent The Wizard’s guards from capturing her but ends up putting his life in danger in the process.

In the musical, Elphaba casts a spell to save his life, but accidentally transforms him into the scarecrow. And he doesn’t have a brain, so how could he remember anything that happened to him before? It’s all very clever.

Who is the Tin Man?

Try not to cry: The Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz is actually little old Boq! He meets a tragic fate at the hands of the unsuspecting Nessarose, soon to be THE WICKED WITCH OF THE EAST. Dun dun dunnn!

Nessarose grows insanely jealous over the fact that Boq had a thing for Glinda. When she discovers Boq only asked her to Fiyero’s party because he was so in love with Glinda, she casts a spell from Elphaba’s spell book to make him fall in love with her. However, it doesn’t quite go to plan, and it ends up causing his heart to shrink and disappear. Elphaba swoops in again to save his life but this transforms him into the Tin Man in the process. A serial flop!

We’ve already met the adorable lion

You must remember the adorable lion character from Wicked: Part One. He was the little cub that Elphaba and Fiyero rescued from Dr. Dillamond’s old classroom. According to Wicked lore, he’ll grow up to be the cowardly lion. I’m so glad he made his little feature!
