Roy’s won 800 games – let’s give him what he wants

All he’s ever wanted is a great home crowd

Roy Williams recorded his 800th career victory against Syracuse at home in front of the Smith Center crowd. The Tar Heel faithful, however, provide far from the best home court advantage.

Coming off a road loss at Indiana earlier this season, both the coach and the team spoke of how great an atmosphere the Hoosiers had in their favor.

This university has been on the wrong end of jokes describing our crowd for far too long. Roy is easily one of the best coaches in the nation, ranking second nationally in winning percentage among active coaches behind only Coach Mark Few of Gonzaga.

For years, he has wanted a better home court advantage. We can all do our part in rewarding him for a great career and give him what he’s always wanted: a home court to be feared by the rest of the NCAA.

Even with an average crowd, the Heels are still undefeated at home this year after losing only one game last season. Providing an atmosphere that can match up with other powerhouses will keep it that way.

With a tough schedule coming up, including games against Virginia, Duke and Louisville, our coach deserves the best advantages we can provide.

It’s been a long time coming to make the Smith Center as feared as other arenas across the country, but we can make it happen. Even though students are only able to stand under one basket, that won’t stop us. We can spread the enthusiasm faster than the student section will be allowed to spread. If you get student tickets – get loud. And encourage the people you know with season tickets to get rowdy.

Here’s to 801, Coach. Thanks for all you’ve done.
