From swinging to swearing: The strict religious rules the Mormon Wives cast choose not to follow
Who knew coffee would be so controversial?!
Amongst the wild swinging drama of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives cast, there are certain more seemingly mundane religious rules such as not drinking hot drinks that they do mainly abide by.
It’s a bit confusing, so let’s have a look at all the religious rules the Mormon church puts in place for members, and which ones the cast of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives don’t follow to the letter.
Swearing is discouraged

The Mormon website simply states: “Profane, vulgar, or crude language or gestures, as well as immoral jokes, are offensive to the Lord and to others.
“Foul language is both degrading and harmful to the Spirit. We should not let others influence us to use foul language. Instead, we should use clean language that uplifts and edifies others, and we should choose friends who use good language.”
It’s pretty clear from both seasons of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives that some of the cast are more than happy to break the religious rules, with swearing being a clear one.
Whilst earrings are allowed, other piercings and tattoos are prohibited

The church warns that piercings can be medically unsafe, alongside promoting an “attitude of rebellion.”
It states: “The trends of tattooing and body piercing, as with otherworldly fashions, are not long-lasting, although the marks or scars they leave on the body are often permanent.
“These worldly fads are practices that members of the Church should choose to avoid because they don’t complement an attitude of respect toward our earthly bodies as the scriptures and prophets teach.
“Of course, those who have had tattoos prior to joining the Church have no need to feel embarrassed.
Hot drinks such as tea and coffee are considered harmful, alongside alcohol

According to the church, Joseph Smith received a revelation from God telling him that “hot drinks” such as tea and coffee are considered harmful.
And even if you’re more of a latte drinker, you’re still not safe as the church updated its rules to include “drinks with names that include café or caffé, mocha, latte, espresso, or anything ending in -ccino are coffee and are against the Word of Wisdom.”
Mayci explained: “Soda is the Mormon version of coffee because we’re not supposed to have coffee or tea, so then Mormons have tons of soda.
Soda shops open the same time coffee shops do, so you see people in the drive-thru getting soda at like 8 in the morning, which is crazy.”

And whilst the religious rules of the Mormons state that members shouldn’t drink alcohol, that hasn’t stopped the cast of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives from indulging now and then.
Whitney explained in the prior season: “Being a member of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I have values and standards that I’m choosing to uphold by.
“I feel like me, Jen and Mayci are the most devout of the whole group. And others who drink alcohol once in a while? Two polar opposites there.”
Infidelity is almost equal to murder in the eyes of the church, so safe to say swinging is supposed to be off the cards

The church’s teachings state: “In the teachings of the Church, next to the crime of murder comes that of adultery, and sexual unchastity.”
And between Taylor’s decision to get a divorce to the various wild swinging scandals that rocked the show, this is one of the major religious rules that is very much waylaid by the cast of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.
